Forums - Nintendo - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake confirmed, coming this year

With this being the main holiday title I'm sure it'll be quite the impressive remake but the decision to spend more time on thumb wrestling than this was certainly strange.

Ocarina of Time is my favorite game of all time (original, i known) but i have to ask, who is this really for?

The original game is AMAZING for it's time, and that time was 1998. There are games on it's on series that surpasses it in scale. Like, what's the plan here? Hyrule field for instance is sooo tiny and uninteresting, no amount of realistic trees and bushes wiil be enough to hide that fact. BUT, if they changed it too much, it wouldn't be Ocarina of Time anymore, would it be? Hyrule field is more like a hub world akin to princess peach castle than a sprolling open world, and that was totaly fine for it's time, it worked. The tecnology wasn't there yet.

My point is, i think a sequel would be a lot better. I consider Twilight Princess to be pretty much a "Ocarina of Time 2". So a knew entry akin to this two games would make a lot more sense.

I'm not saying that the game is going to sell porly or anything like that, just to be clear. I'm just talking strictly as a fan of the original.

Remakes are so commonplace now for three reasons.

The first is that consumers have shown they will buy the same game twice (and three times, and four times, and five and six and--), and publishers go wherever the money is. The second is that remakes are significantly cheaper to make, so the overhead, or lack thereof, is very attractive. The third is due to the abhorrent  development times of modern gaming. If it's going to take ten years to make a freakin' sequel, what are you going to do to keep customers locked into your brand? You need something. Remakes fill the void and do so on the cheap.

I don't buy remakes, myself. I own the originals. I play the originals. I don't want the the originals changed because I adore them, as is. I want new games on new consoles, not old ones.

But I am clearly not in the majority.

The original runs at like 15fps, so thats a reason for the remake alone.

I give you that, but, we have a extremely servicible remake on the 3DS already. Running at 30fps and it looks great there. Why not realease a 4k/60fps version of that on the switch 2 and then they could focus on a new entry instead of another remake.

I agree, but here's the thing. The game looks to be very ambitious, a complete rebrand in therm of graphics. It can't be a cheap project to produce, as far as we seen of course.

Why not just go all out? Make a new game at this point. Release a port of Oot 3D slated for this year and tease a new entry in the oot style of titles for next year.

Again, i understand the idea. Remakes like this sell for nostalgic sake alone, it's a good business decision on Nintendo's part. This is just me wishful thinking pretty much. 😄

They are focusing on a new entry. This is probably not made by the Zelda team.

Anyway Im very excited for it. Ive only beaten the game twice, so Im up for another go.

Some people gonna have to apologize to Nate through their teeth. He was right on basically everything.

Hopefully no one does. I'm just imagining how crazy of an announcement this would be if he didn't leak it. Not a fan of that man lol

They will show more later when the live action movie trailer is unveiled (possible Universal Studios theme area announcement too?).

People need to understand now that marketing for games like this will orbit around movie release dates too, same thing with Star Fox, they would not show it at all until the movie had a full week out in Japan first.

The Blueprint of Ocarina of time is still incredible and I'd say its easily best paced and varied Zelda by a long shot if you're looking for a blockbuster experience. It absolutely deserves to be archived in a modern form for fans to relieve and for the almost 20m new fans (since BOTW) to visit for the first time.

The music and locals are truly iconic and there hasn't been a more whimsical and tone setting introduction that the one in OOTs Kokiri Village. Within 15mins you can be within your first distinct dungeon, a completely tonally and narratively distinct area and not just 1/100 shrines (Looking at you BOTW/TOTK). You've glimpse the evil that is Gandondorf, you've entered the great deku's mouth to purify it of a curse. It really epitomises the spirit of Zelda in a way other entries do not, no matter how much bigger or more complex their worlds are.

Scale really isn't the be and end all of immersion.

The young and adult dynamic shifts the world in a way which remains untouched. Places you remember fondly in the opening hours are now haunted or have completely different dynamics/character relations.

Comparatively Windwaker is bloated and less varied. The core component of Twilight Princess (The twilight world) is ugly and repetitive. Skyword sword has you sit through 30mins of text dialogue just to get the game started and then makes you backtrack half way through the game in one of the worst ways we've seen in a Zelda game. BOTW/TOTK lack momentum and dedicated levels design.

OOT is peak Zelda.

It's fair you bring up Hyrule field but i don't think that is really a conundrum in solving it. If you fill the main hub world with a few more interesting gameplay dynamics, sidequests and content, no one is going to say you've ruined the game lol

I'll reserve judgement for gameplay, but that look for link in the cinematic looks really... strange. Kinda stock UE4 stuff.

Cool it launches this year tho, but should have showed gameplay in this case.

You know, at first I was fine with the art, but after watching teaser few more times, you might be onto something - I was expecting something a bit more stylized, more like Kena, and though I won't jump the gun and will wait for more footage, it indeed looks a bit off for Zelda game.

Also personally hoping this is a 30fps game. I wanted them to push the visuals to max at 720-900p DLSS (1440p output). I have a feeling Nintendo won't include different performance modes.

Shame spoilers could not really be avoided. It felt like unwrapping a Christmas present, when you already know what's in the box.

Still fun, but could have been better.
