Remakes are so commonplace now for three reasons.
The first is that consumers have shown they will buy the same game twice (and three times, and four times, and five and six and--), and publishers go wherever the money is. The second is that remakes are significantly cheaper to make, so the overhead, or lack thereof, is very attractive. The third is due to the abhorrent development times of modern gaming. If it's going to take ten years to make a freakin' sequel, what are you going to do to keep customers locked into your brand? You need something. Remakes fill the void and do so on the cheap.
I don't buy remakes, myself. I own the originals. I play the originals. I don't want the the originals changed because I adore them, as is. I want new games on new consoles, not old ones.
But I am clearly not in the majority.
