Forums - Gaming - Valve raises price of Steam Deck to $789/$949 for 512gb/1tb models

I recall debating the potential ps6 price with a few folks, friendly discussion, but there was a small group who had the ps6 under $700... i wonder if they still believe that? Not in a "lets fight over our predictions," but I am curious if those have changed positions.  Next gen is going to be super ****ing curious.

Currently the contract prices of DDR5 are around $21/GB, while GDDR6 is $11.63/GB. So that's helpful for home consoles. $699 would probably be losing Sony $150+ per console at this point though. Which isn't unheard of but I'm not sure they'd go for that.

For comparison DDR5 was about $3.33/GB a little over a year ago lol.

I would be surprised if they went for it, as in very surprised.  I still think $800, but maybe they take a loss and jack up PSN?  Anything seems possible at this point.  I never would have guessed my 3-year-old PC would increase in value.

The 1TB SteamDeck model is more expensive than the current "outrageously expensive" 2TB PS5 Pro lol. Nintendo (which typically makes more money from hardware than Sony) plans to only raise Switch 2's price by around $50. I'm starting to think they'll adjust that up by another $50-$100 or lose too much on hardware in the not too distant future.

https://www.trendforce.com/presscenter/news/20260514-13044.html

Here, LPDDR5X prices are projected to increase this quarter by 78-83%. Contrary to some early expectations I read here, LPDDR prices are surging significantly more than GDDR. This means that the price of the PS6 handheld may be affected more than the main console. PS6 handheld is said to have 24GB of LPDDR5X. That's twice the RAM size of Switch 2. I expect a downgrade + delay.

The PS6 handheld could still be cheaper and several times more powerful than a 1TB SteamDeck, but I don't know if it's going to be cheaper than the standard PS6.

The truth is we just don't have the slightest idea whether things will calm down by 2028/2029 or prices will continue to rise. So base PS6's price can be anywhere between $600 and $1200. Sub $600 feels like a dream now... but who knows.

At $1000+, we should see an unprecedented decline in hardware sales, but most people would still be playing on the weaker and older PC's/consoles they already own. So I don't really expect an industry collapse.

I think the PS5 being $600 is a ship that has already sailed at this point.

Even as I personally expect things to be considerably better by late 2028, I would still expect a $700 price at beast.

Anything above that is way more likely right now, but it's also too pricey for it to have hopes of being a 80M+ seller.

This is where I think gamers need to revolt, honestly.  Gamers should never have accepted paying for online, MTX, classic games behind subscriptions, etc.

My point being, if gamers accept expensive hardware, even if prices drop, MS/Sony/Nintendo will not drop prices.  I love gaming but hope hardware tanks hard, like really hard, and gamers make it clear they are not paying an arm/leg for hardware.  None of these companies are hurting for money, it is greed.

At the end of the day corporations will keep pushing until consumers pushback.  Just look at how quickly Sony dropped the price of the ps3 and Nintendo dropped the price of the 3DS.

Worse case, I will stick with my rig and play my Steam games and enjoy emulation.  I am tired of controller, hardware, game, etc. costs.

Yeah, he waxes on about how to stop piracy by offering a better service than piracy. Then he allows Denuvo and 3rd party EULAs onto Steam. Both of those can make your game unplayable if you aren't connected to the internet. Denuvo in particular is a computer virus with kernel access to your rig.

If Steam didn't allow DRM, it'd be in a position not all that unlike GOG. GOG is great, but it's not like it's thriving like Steam. I hate DRM with a passion, but from a business standpoint, not allowing DRM is a very challenging position.

More like if a PC game isn't on Steam its developer is in a position not unlike that of Wii U era Nintendo. Steam dominates the PC market and can easily make the rules. Or Gabe could at least shut up about how to fix piracy. You can't chop down the rainforest and then blather on about saving the rainforest. It doesn't work that way.

Major publishers already have their own clients and have been keeping their games off of Steam along the years. Most of them are back now, but I'm sure they're not too hesitant to re-evaluate their stance if necessary. Some publishers would definitely adapt and drop DRM, but some would likely adapt by moving away from Steam instead. There might have been a time when Valve could have enforced publishers to not use DRM with much more ease than now, but that ship has sailed a long, long time ago. There is actual real competition on PC, tough as it might be due to Steam's dominance.

That's all a theory, though. We would have to see how it actually plays out. I realize that my comment is also a theory. Anyway, the point is that Gabe talks as if he doesn't do exactly the anti-consumer BS that everyone else does. In fact, I would argue that the unique combination of Denuvo and ONLY having digital copies of games is the most anti-consumer thing any platform can do when selling games.

Also, notice how nobody has said "F@&K STEAM!", yet over this price increase. If it were Nintendo raising prices by this much the Nintenhater crowd would be coming out of the woodwork not just to bash on the price increase, but to claim that the entire company is the spawn of Satan.

Also F@&K Game Key Cards and Drift. Nintendo deserves criticism too. But not outright company hatred.

Part of the problem is that Gaben simps take every game that doesn't come to Steam as a personal insult.
