Forums - Sony - Sony now requires online check in for purchased PSN games

can we update the topic/title now that we know this is just for the refund window

So this entire thing was blown way out of proportions.
For digital bought games, it checks while your downloading.... your gonna be online anyways (while your downloading off the net).

There is no 30day recheck used for anything.

This was supposedly just to patch in a bug, in people abusing the "automated return policy" option sony gives PS5 users.
Where if you buy a game, don't play it, within 14 days you can get a refund. People where doing that, and using the key's for exploited PS5 consoles, to play pirated games (for free).

So this basically checks to make sure, you don't refund + keep the game, so they know you aren't exploiting/pirating.

That is all it is.
Also Xbox does this as well supposedly.
Even steam, checks licenses of games, and time/gameplay for refund reasons.

Can someone explain something to me? We have a thread bashing Sony, while someone in the same thread is claiming Sony gets a free pass.. am I the only one who is baffled and sees the clear paradox?

Remember when there was talk about gpu/cpu balancing power came out to "PS5 is only 8Tflops" , "It overclocks to reach that", "It needs liquid metal, to even funktion, its rushed!",  "Liquid metal is mess it up", "Series X is gonna run every game better, higher settings"....

There was so much of it.
Most of it, came from Xbox fans in a discord server or some sh*t like that... where they were actively making "coordinated efforts to spread misinformation" about the PS5 before/early launch.

Sony never got a free pass, I think it gets more flack than any of the 3 when there is "concern".

Sony don't get a free pass, but wouldn't say they get the most flack either, the level of misinformation, grifting, and dooming targeted at Switch 2 since its reveal is way beyond anything I've ever seen aimed at any Sony console, even the PS3.

100% agreed.  I suppose popularity shifts and right now it is cool to bash Sony, while Nintendo tends to be the most protected/defended.  Personally, I don't think it is even close, Sony gets ripped on things that simply are not a big deal at all.

You can see once the issue was addressed, not even when directly quoted the person will come back to say anything, this thread is basically crawling now that we have info, compared to how it was before when we had none.

You should check out Eurogamer chats.  I was laughing.  Still a bunch of people who think if they download a digital game, don't activate it within 30 days, Sony will delete the game from their HDD and not offer a refund.

Some people will still be simply misinformed, as we can see spreading the issue is much quicker than the spreading the answer.

I'm not opposed to quickly spreading an issue tho, I actually think its great so companies are forced to answer. As I said before, it was clear it was not a bug but intentional, which it is, just not what we thought it could be (gladly).

But yes, some will choose to still spread false information even when they know it, or to just stay quiet now as it helps to not reach as many people as the issue once did. That's the bad part. That's how humans are, it was that way with gossip, with newspapers, with tv, and now with the internet. Which is sad.

Yeah I gotta hard disagree with this. All three have been getting hit hard by the internet in recent times— Switch 2 literally has seen a new exclusives every three weeks, alongside two GotY exclusives (and one to-be-GotY exclusive Pokopia), since launch at a price point of $450USD and the internet still goes rapid. Looking at the MC User Score on almost all Nintendo first-party releases since Switch 2’s launch is evidence enough to Nintendo being very much not “protected.”

The last time Sony got the most flack of the big 3 was in like 2008 when the PS3 still cost way more than the competition, was still lacking killer exclusives, and was getting mostly inferior ports. Once 2009 rolled around and the likes of Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 rocked up along with a price cut, their rep with internet enthusiast gamers was mostly salvaged.

Since then, Xbox and Nintendo have taken turns at being the most criticised online of the three.

I'd say Xbox was champion from 2013-2026. 13 years undefeated. Sony should be taking the crown now tho
