Forums - Gaming - Which was the better "cut down" model, Xbox Series S or Switch Lite, and why?

Which was better as a budget model?

Xbox Series S 10 33.33%

Switch Lite 20 66.67%

Total:30

Both are so bad that I can't recommend them.

Switch Lite gets stick drift within a year. Any product that breaks itself, to the point of needing extensive repairs, within a year is trash. Sure, the original Switch also gets joycon drift, but you can buy a Pro controller for it pretty easily. Once the Switch Lite breaks, you need to take it to a specialist or pray that someone sells Hall Effect sticks for it.

As for Series S, it's a digital-only console with last-gen power, trying to play current-gen games.

Yeah, I hadn't paid any attention to the Series S until S2 comparisons started.  I didnt realize just how underpowered the Series S was.  Roughly a 1650 give or take?  The S2 keeps up with it, way better than I expected, because it is way weaker than I assumed.  I wouldn't touch one.

MS clocked XSS unreasonably low IMO - I get they wanted to save on everything, so only 20CUs vs 52CUs in XSX, but in addition they clocked its GPU at only 1.56GHz (vs 1.82GHz in XSX), when comparable RX 6000 cards are running at >2GHz.

If they made XSS to actually perform at half the XSX, it would be quite solid console. Devs treating ports for it as an afterthought doesn't help either.

Fair points, especially the afterthought treatment.  Some custom ports potentially would offer some good results.

I mean, yes it does. You can't get docked mode so games run worse than a docked Switch. However since devs plan for portable anyway it doesn't affect regular switch games performance. Series S affects X games.

Sigh.

You guys are addicted to arguing.

Quite the opposite, I generally block people online who give me conflict. I'm abrasive & opinionated, that much is true but more lack of social skills from being ASD, also text is a bad way to convey intention and emotion so it can be read in any way. I have no real emotion replying to people online. Usually quite relaxed. I dislike dealing with people when they give me conflict I block them for my own mental health. I hope this clears that up. I wish no conflict with you or anyone else.

A few years ago, I might have said Series S. But I played, or tried to play, Doom: The Dark Ages on the Series S recently and it made me realize how underpowered the thing actually is. The game had such a soft, smeared look to it. I'm very far from being a graphics snob, and even I couldn't deal with it.

Switch Lite is obviously an inferior, less flexible version of Switch, but it doesn't have a significant performance drop-off from its bigger brother. And, to be fair, it's superior in a couple ways, e.g., battery life, d-pad.

They both have a lot of things that suck. Keep in mind, I haven't used either of them.
Switch Lite is handheld-only. They never released a special dock or cord to let it connect to a TV. It also drifts for a lot of people and then you have to send the whole system out for repair.
Xbox Series S has no way to play physical games or physical media. There's no optional add-on like Sony allows for the Slim Digital or PS5 Pro. No physical media no matter what. It has the same library as Series X but a lot of games are heavily compromised. I know Switch 2 is a newer product, but in docked mode some Switch 2 games like similar and sometimes better around the edges than Series S (like Street Fighter 6).
All in all, Switch Lite is narrowly better.

Both suck, but Switch in general is outdated crap in general.

Just my 2 cents.

As mentioned the Switch Lite being identical power wise to the other Switch models in handheld mode makes it the better one. The Series S isn't good value when the digital PS5 is only £100 more. The Switch Lite isn't ideal either though since while it does have the big advantage of being the most portable the Switch OLED is a better handheld console otherwise due to the better screen and battery life.

I like the idea of the Series S on paper, but no disc drive kinda kills it for me as I prefer buying games physically.
Then again, Switch Lite isn't my jam either as I play almost exclusively on the TV.
