Forums - Gaming - Games you played on unusual platforms (And what the experience was like)

What are some games that you played on a system that's not the popular choice for that game, and what was it like?

My first introduction to StarCraft and RTS's in general was StarCraft 64. It was an interesting experience at the time but I can't imagine going back to it today (very slow, low res, limited audio, etc). I had a PC gaming friend over one day for some splitscreen and he destroyed me with ease, lol.

I played the Saturn version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

It was quite great. That version has two extra levels compared to the PS1 one, and you can play as Maria Renard. It was a fantastic experience, it makes the PS1 version feels a little rushed.

Tomb Raider: Legends on the PSP and Borderlands 2 on the Vita. Both games often run between 10-20 fps with severely downgraded graphics. But I loved the novelty of playing those games on the go, and still had some fun with them.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

I played a bunch of PC games for the first time on N64: Hexen, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D. I enjoyed them all. My friends and I had a blast in splitscreen competitive multiplayer in Duke Nukem 64.

I also played Half-Life for the first time on PS2. I think it’s a really great port. It even improves upon the original in a couple of ways.

Let’s see, what else. I played Madden NFL 07 on Wii. I believe it was there at launch? I loved batting away balls as a CB with a flick of the Wii Remote :)

Playing Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena on the Dreamcast was pretty awesome!

Using the single analog stick left movement a lot to be desired lol but hooking up a keyboard and mouse made it practically identical to the PC version. I think there both exclusive maps as well as some excluded maps, but the most important ones were there!

Played a lot of split screen multiplayer with both games. Still a ton of fun to this day!

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

I played some of Resident Evil 2 on Game.com. (Pronounced Game Com not Game dot Com, it was a failed handheld in the late 90s with a touchscreen)  It sucked. Back in the 90s playing Mortal Kombat on SEGA Game Gear. I was hugely impressed with the graphics. Gameplay was not great. I now own 3 Dragon Quest games for Xbox Series X. It was strange at first but used to it now. It blew my mind playing Sonic games on Gamecube back in the day. Seeing Final Fantasy on a non Nintendo consoles was so strange in the 90s.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

StarCraft 64.

I was playing it on PC at the time, but also was a N64 owner.
...So got it on the console.

Absolutely atrocious to micro-manage units on it, the FMV sequences were cut, audio quality was destroyed and more... But it was still probably one of the better console RTS games until Halo Wars. (Red Alert being on PS1 and Command and Conquer on the N64 as well)

When I was a kid I played through Half-Life 1 on the PS2 and later initially played Half-Life 2 on the PS3 but didn't do a full playthrough of the latter till years later. I also tried Skyrim on the PS3 and stopped shortly after it bugged out letting me clip through everything for some reason.

I played Red Alert on PS1 as a kid, because it took a while for us to get a proper gaming-capable PC, and I got Red Alert before that. I mostly enjoyed building my base and then overwhelming the enemy once I was done, and it worked just fine for that. In hindsight, it's definitely not an ideal platform for the game, but back then, I had a ton of fun with it. I think I vaguely recall it feeling a bit clumsy even then, but like I said, it wasn't really a problem.
