Forums - Sales - Black Friday Week USA. PS5 #1, Switch 2 #2, Nex Playground #3

Looking back at 2017… turns out Switch did significantly worse not just than PS4 but also XBOne during November. In fact, holiday sales were so strong for PS4 and XBOne that each system had hit their peak holiday season, meanwhile Switch saw its weakest (pre-2024). Come December, however, and Switch would pull way far ahead.

Furthermore, Mat himself affirms that, yes, this performance says nothing more than “PS5 got a solid price cut,” affirming the claim of NS2 & PS5 having sold very solid during BF and not that NS2 is headed for the fabled cliff.

Yes, Switch 2 has been an unprecedent hit, but these figures do not suggest anything poor about Switch 2’s trajectory. Either PS5 and NS2 are experiencing crazy strong holiday quarters (most likely, seeing how NS2 & PS5 performed in October), or PS5 is seeing good success with NS2 falling apart (very unlikely… I mean, the system literally has three 10mil sellers entering its first holiday season. Come on now lol).

Three 10mil sellers?

There's Mario Kart World and Pokemon Legands ZA.

What's the third?

DK! Technically none of them are (officially) 10mil sellers, but they are all fast on track to hit it eventually during the NS2 generation.

Not trying to be tribalistic here, but to compete with the PS5 in sales you'd need something much better than Switch 2 specs. Your biggest games to showcase the value of the Switch 2 is an up-res version of pokemon ZA and metroid prime? People aren't going to be impressed with that and these consoles are big investments for the general consumer. Nintendo is playing it way too safe to be a competitor to PS5 but maybe in their business vision they don't even consider PS5 a competitor. Also, if PS5 selling this much now, imagine what it will be selling during GTA 6 release. It could be a figure that we struggle to even imagine.

Switch 2's specs are great for the price (for a hybrid/handheld). GTA6's system selling effect will depend on console prices at that time. But it won't have a huge negative impact on Switch 2's sales. The Switch 2 should be able to beat PS5 next year with ease. And if it doesn't, the specs aren't to blame.

I have been ready to pull the trigger on the Switch 2 a few times now but I am holding off for a few readons:

1. The screen. It is awful. Especially when comparing to something like the Switch Oled or even the PS Portal.
2. The Price is still too high. Why cant we at least get a region locked version like Japan for 350?
3. I've heard the updated form factor makes a difference but im afraid it will kill my hands like the original Switch. The PS Portal is so comfortable its crazy. Its the most comfortable handheld I have ever had by a mile. I will probably need to get a grip for the Switch 2.

Now all that being said I am apprehension about waiting because what if prices go up and how much will a Oled Switch 2 cost?

Im already sold on a PS6 handheld just because I know it will be super ergonomic. And although I think it will be a hybrid like the Switch, it still wont play Nintendo games. Whats gonna be wild is if the PS6 handheld comes in cheaper or the same price as the Switch 2. The one thing Sony has to deal with is gonna be those ram prices.

1. I've seen lots of analysis of the screen and it's ghosting problems. In actual practice I can't see it when I'm using it. I don't have any issues with the screen even if it's proven to have flaws. Going from a Steam Deck OLED to the Switch 2, I didn't have any negative thoughts really.

2. I think the price is fair, but it really depends on how much you will use it.

3. Ergonomics are better than Switch 1, but I never had issues with Switch 1 so I don't know if it would solve your problems.

Having said that would I recommend most people buy a switch 2 right now? No. I've owned it since launch and played only about 50 hours, and most of that was Fire Emblem Engage, a switch 1 game with no upgrades. There's not enough there, Switch 1 had a much stronger early lineup.

I don't get your point at all, Switch reached 153M+ sales by basically having little of the library of games that PS have. So people buying Nintendo consoles evidently don't buy it for the type of games that are available on PS, we see this clearly from the best selling games on PS vs Switch, there is no overlap at all. People that play CoD, Battlefield etc are not the same audience that buy Nintendo consoles, those people are already on PS/PC and has always been on those platforms to begin with.

Switch 2 is clearly not a competitor to PS5 in the way Xbox series was a competitor, due to Nintendo not having the same software library and thus not the same audience overlap that PS shared with Xbox.

As somebody who plays NS2 in Docked almost exclusively, I really cannot comment on most of this. I’ve found the Pro Controller to be extremely comfortable in the hands.

Have you considered third-party accessories to add to the first-party controllers? I will say that the size increase is a tremendous upgrade over NS1– I found the joy cons on NS1 to be highly uncomfortable and way too small, whereas on NS2, my only complaint is they will often rest in my hands in a “crooked” orientation (which I’d imagine there exists a third-party accessory that could address this… I may actually look into this and report back if you’d be interested)..

As for the screen, I’m one of those weird people who aftually prefers the non-OLED over the OLED (though that could be a consequence of me having grown up on NS1 and having played a ton in handheld back when I was in MS/HS, whereas I have only done a handful of sessions in handheld on my NSWOLED). FWIW I was blown away by the NS2 screen and audio— it really does feel like a massive upgrade over NS1. So much so that I would be open to playing more often in handheld mode, as the experience is so comparable to docked now.

As for games? The current big offerings are: MKWorld, DKBananza, Kirby Air Riders, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Pokémon Legends Z-A, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and a ton of upgraded NS1 titles (e.g. SMOdyssey & Zelda @ 4k 60fps). How much you’d get out of this software is individual preference. I personally have been glued to the system since launch, with rarely a moment having gone by without a game to sunk my teeth into (and I’ve only played MKWorld, Kirby Airs Riders, and some of DKBananza up until this point).

My Switch 2 is supposed to ship to me today, so I can let you know what I think about the screen later.

About the price, it is also expensive here, but I set goals for what I should pay for hardware, so I did the same with the PS5, and I was surprised the Switch 2 came close to my pricing goal so early, the PS5 took 2 years to reach it, and if it is still too pricey for you, hold on, that's what I do.

For reference the PS5 launch price here was 5000, and the Switch 2 was 4500 (pretty easy comparision with the USD prices, just slash the last 0).

I set goals of 3500 for the PS5 and 3000 for the Switch 2, WAY lower than the launch price. Got my PS5 Horizon Bundle for 3600 and my Switch 2 for 3100. I dunno how long it will take for them to be around what I think I should pay, but I'll just wait until it gets really close to that.

About the form factor, I only pity the Switch, and the Switch 2 now, are too big to carry around, but I never had a problem holding the Switch, it obviously is not as comfortable as a controller, but I don't think it is a problem at all.
