Forums - Nintendo - Would you be happy with Smash Bros. Ultimate Switch 2 Version as the Smash game for this gen?

I actually think this is likely to happen. “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DX”.

Around the Network

Yes.

Just all it needs is higher visuals upgrade, more characters, more stages, more stickers/extra padded stuff and a new single player mode added.

Wouldn't matter to me. I have a copy of Melee. I'm good 'til death.

Nah Ultimate is nearly 7 years old so there really should be a completely new entry within a few years. A Switch 2 version of it being the only Smash on the Switch 2 would mean people would be waiting potentially over 15 years till the next new entry. It also wouldn't make sense business wise to wait that long since Smash is by far one of Nintendo's biggest system sellers so I doubt they'd wanna waste that for the Switch 2. I could see a Switch 2 version of Ultimate followed by a new game in a few years though and that would be the best scenario since the competitive scene could really use a boost.

I'm not a Smash fan, but this would be a mistake from a sales POV as it would ruin its potential as a system seller, hardly anyone would buy a Switch 2 to just play Ultimate in 4K, but many would for a new Smash.

Yeah, I am kinda in the same boat. Ultimate was indeed Ultimate for the series, and it may take a long time for technology and ideas to evolve enough to give space to something new. I think a Switch 2 version would be great. Instead they should focus on games that indeed are always new like Fire Emblem, Zelda and Mario.

I dont really get why some people want these Deluxe versions of previous gen games. We have just been through this with WiiU games to the Switch. At least the excuse there was that not many people bought the WiiU, so it made sense. Everyone bought the Switch. So Im not interested in buying the same game twice just because Nintendo cant figure out a way to make a sequel. If we keep accepting this, then they might as well just release their games as a service...

Yeah remastering Switch 1 games on Switch 2 just feels unnecessary and like a lazy cash grab, hardly anyone with a Switch 2 didn't have a Switch 1, make new stuff instead.

While I admire Sakurai’s interest in avoiding the “endless sequel” scenario which plagues virtually every form of media, it does certainly make for a very tricky situation… especially when the entry which was supposed to be the finale ends up becoming one of Nintendo’s best selling first-party titles of all time.

That said, I really have no idea what’s next for this franchise. If Nintendo is looking to put a new/unique entry on Switch 2, then I don’t believe Ultimate will receive a NS2 Edition for the sole purpose that the new game will 100% be a major departure from the franchise norm, which may lead consumers to revolt by rejecting the new.

I was thinking about what the next Smash Bros game would be like and how they can improve it.

I think Ultimate is pretty dang perfect, outside of online features.

If they were to create a Smash Bros. Ultimate: Switch 2 Version and improve the online features (rankings, stats, etc...), accessibility (easier and more match-making options with friends), minor graphical and performance upgrades, I think that would be a home run! Maybe add a character here and there... I think that's all I'd really need out of a "new" Smash game. Maybe add some more single player content? (although I don't play much single player when playing Smash)

What do you guys want to see from the next Smash game?

I mean for a new Smash game that would obviously be hugely disappointing, because it wouldn't be a new Smash game, just a "Deluxe" port. Like the other Switch 2 versions of Switch games, it'd just be something Nintendo would charge an extra $10 for if you already have the game to play a slightly upgraded Switch 2 version.

But as to what to actually do with Smash now, I think that is the biggest open question out of all Nintendo's franchises. I don't see them topping Smash, as it really was the Ultimate version of what the series had been working towards the whole time. Sure they could always put out a new Smash with a better single player campaign, but the main part of the game (the fights) isn't gonna outdo Ultimate in terms of content and well the gameplay is largely the same from game to game so that won't really be any different either, and even if they tried to outdo it content-wise it'd feel like they are just putting Ultimate out again with a few things added.

The only thing that I can even think of that makes any sense is to just make a Smash Online that is only available through the NSO Expansion Pack. And they can just continually add to it over the years. But in terms of finances, I don't see how that would be more profitable than selling a $70 Smash game to tens of millions of people, but since I don't see how they outdo Smash Ultimate, a Smash Online game that can continually evolve not just through the years but across generations feels like best option. Only other thing I can think of is totally changing up the fighting gameplay in Smash but then everyone would hate it simply for not being Smash Bros anymore.
