While I admire Sakurai’s interest in avoiding the “endless sequel” scenario which plagues virtually every form of media, it does certainly make for a very tricky situation… especially when the entry which was supposed to be the finale ends up becoming one of Nintendo’s best selling first-party titles of all time.
That said, I really have no idea what’s next for this franchise. If Nintendo is looking to put a new/unique entry on Switch 2, then I don’t believe Ultimate will receive a NS2 Edition for the sole purpose that the new game will 100% be a major departure from the franchise norm, which may lead consumers to revolt by rejecting the new.
