Not surprising; that thing is damn expensive in most places. Around here, a PS5 Pro with an added disc-drive will set you back about 1150$ (and that's the cheapest you'll find right now). That's a lot for any console.

I could be wrong but I read it as low single digits of total LTD PS5 sales. Meaning five years of standard PS5 vs one year of PS5 Pro. |
Ah yes, I think you're right.

They can release a console as expensive as they please because there is no competitor that has the will to fight with them on price anymore. Just look at Xbox's 800$ console as proof of that. It can also be a meagre upgrade and cheap console and nothing bad can happen because there's no competitors who want to release a a cheap console in that power range. Switch 2 is still much weaker than PS5. It all comes down to Sony's preference of how they want to do business and what works best for them. They will win with whatever strategy they choose but I guess it's what's best for the shareholders.  |
Luxury position? Not at all. You only need to look at the sales pace of the PS5 which trails behind the PS4 despite Xbox faltering.
Having Microsoft as a competitor was beneficial for Sony most of the time. Whatever bad things Sony did, a comparison with Microsoft commonly resulted in a conclusion of "Well, at least it's not as bad as Xbox." With Microsoft out of the picture, it will become a lot more common that PS will be compared to the PC and that's a comparison that isn't as easy to win for Sony.
Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

Xbox has been faltering, but they still sold 30million+ units. That's 30 million stolen from PlayStation that Sony is going to get for free next gen by default of Xbox not having a traditional closed platform competitor out. It will be a PC that will cost roughly 900$ that will sell only a few million max. I'd call that an extremely luxury position to be in.
What's better. Being compared to Xbox and looking good or inheriting their entire userbase for free just by default of one party no longer participating?

Apparently maths isn't one of your strengths.
Xbox Series X|S will sell around 20 million units less than the Xbox One in its lifetime, but Sony hasn't inherited any of that as the PS5 has been selling less than the PS4 up to the same point in the lifecycle.

It's been selling better than PS4 in USA though, so yes they have already inherited millions from Xbox in the USA. The issue with Europe is that the economy is bad so the PS5 is selling a lot worse than PS4 did but Xbox has nothing to do with that because the Xbone always sold pretty bad in Europe.

Even if the price was better, I don't think the PS5 Pro would be doing well. There are few games that take advantage of the hardware. Not only was the PS4 Pro priced better, it had games that showed a real benefit to owning one. Has there been any really good Pro implementations out side of Stellar Blade? I guess Rebirth was okay too. |
Even ignoring the games side of the equation, there were intrinsic benefits to the PS4 Pro.. Like games would load faster. (Thanks to faster CPU and HDD).
Price is the biggest factor... Remember for years console gamers screeched that PC's couldn't compete because of higher pricing... Well. Welcome to PC pricing console gamers, took you awhile to join the club.
PS5 Pro at $1,200 AUD is more than my "Gaming Laptop" with an RTX 4060 which I got on sale for less than $900 AUD.

The most popular games are games like Minecraft, Fortnite. Roblox, Rocket League, GTA 5... And there has been literally zero point for people to upgrade from their Xbox One and Playstation 4 to the next-gen just for those titles.

Not surprising, honestly, considering the console costs $200 more than the base PS5. I know it's mainly because of the increased storage and stronger hardware, but it's still too much in my opinion.

Yeah here in Australia it's $1200 for the PS5 Pro itself, plus another $124 for the disc drive, so $1324 in total which is just insane. (And another $50 for the stand)
For comparison's sake, the PS4 Pro was $560 here when it came out, so less than half the price.
Hopefully this leads to a longer generation like PS3/Xbox 360 and eventually a well priced next gen console.
Expecting 2027 for next gen but wouldnt mind 2028 or later.
Visually, games have peaked - they should focus on optimization and performance.
