Sony are in a luxury position next gen. They can release a console as expensive as they please because there is no competitor that has the will to fight with them on price anymore. Just look at Xbox's 800$ console as proof of that. It can also be a meagre upgrade and cheap console and nothing bad can happen because there's no competitors who want to release a a cheap console in that power range. Switch 2 is still much weaker than PS5. It all comes down to Sony's preference of how they want to do business and what works best for them. They will win with whatever strategy they choose but I guess it's what's best for the shareholders.

Luxury position? Not at all. You only need to look at the sales pace of the PS5 which trails behind the PS4 despite Xbox faltering.

Having Microsoft as a competitor was beneficial for Sony most of the time. Whatever bad things Sony did, a comparison with Microsoft commonly resulted in a conclusion of "Well, at least it's not as bad as Xbox." With Microsoft out of the picture, it will become a lot more common that PS will be compared to the PC and that's a comparison that isn't as easy to win for Sony.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.
