Having Microsoft as a competitor was beneficial for Sony most of the time. Whatever bad things Sony did, a comparison with Microsoft commonly resulted in a conclusion of "Well, at least it's not as bad as Xbox." With Microsoft out of the picture, it will become a lot more common that PS will be compared to the PC and that's a comparison that isn't as easy to win for Sony.

Xbox has been faltering, but they still sold 30million+ units. That's 30 million stolen from PlayStation that Sony is going to get for free next gen by default of Xbox not having a traditional closed platform competitor out. It will be a PC that will cost roughly 900$ that will sell only a few million max. I'd call that an extremely luxury position to be in. 

What's better. Being compared to Xbox and looking good or inheriting their entire userbase for free just by default of one party no longer participating?

Xbox Series X|S will sell around 20 million units less than the Xbox One in its lifetime, but Sony hasn't inherited any of that as the PS5 has been selling less than the PS4 up to the same point in the lifecycle.
