The reason why people are so quick to jump to that conclusion is because of the times we've had to go through. You didn't see much of this before the woke era. As for your assertion that they artificially shoe-in someone based on their identity... that's exactly the problem. Because you can't choose someone based on their sexual orientation, color of skin or political background without simultaneously rejecting someone else because of the same thing. It's inherently impossible. The only fair way way out of this mess has always been to ensure all people have the same legal rights, and to give the best, most deserving person the position, regardless of their racial or sexual identity. In other words, merit-only. |
Sometimes the process of choosing a worker is exclusionary by default, like in this case if the MC is a female of course the voice actor needs to be a female since males, with few exceptions, cannot correctly dub female voices. Now, regarding the ethnicity of the MC, I'm not a particular fan of what americans tend to do, which is always casting actors of the same ethnicity of the characters. I can only think they are afraid of this be seen as white washing, in the same way you should not cast a white or black woman to play as an Asian character in a movie or TV show
Regardless, "shoehorn" a main character that belongs to a minority in a GAME is among my least concerns when it comes to gaming development issues. Companies do all kinds choices to maximize games appeal, from gameplay to story choices. Ghost of Tsushima choose to be settled in mediaval Japan, and it worked to attract japanese gamers. Now they want more women to play their games and choose a woman as a main character. No big deal
I don't see why choosing minorities as MC in games should be particularly concerning or something that needs to be scrutinized so hard. Is anyone being hurted because Sucker Punch want to attract more women with a female MC?
