They are concerned with the motive behind it. That there is a small leadership at the studio, sitting around, talking about agendas, ticking off lists in the hopes of currying the favor of a tiny-but-very-loud angry band of people that make up the majority of extremists on social media. Because let's face it. If that's true, if that's what's really going on, it can only mean two things: one, that they are inherently biased against certain races and sexes and two, that they are inherently liars and manipulators... and I think we can all agree that neither of those things are good for the planet earth. Why every time the main character is either non white, LGBT or female this question arrives? Should we all speculate that if a main character is a straight white male is because the devs hate women, gay people and other races?
As for why the main characters are members of minorities, for me the reason is pretty obvious. They want minorities to see themselves in videogames, which is a additional motivation for them to play said games. Since most of legacy games and famous IPs already feature male white leads, new IPs and new installments will often have more minorities as lead characters
The agenda here is "how convince more people to play my games" instead of "we hate white man"
