Very curious to see how Borderlands and other third parties perform on S2.

There's a lot of sentiment about franchises like Resident Evil etc declining because they were stuck on Playstation but I kinda suspect it was the other way round. Playstation hardware decline and newer baseline (8-9m LT) is more a reflection of Japans lack of interest in most modern "AAA" titles

When FF VII Remake and Resident Evil new titles releases on Switch 2 and sell poorly your feelings will be confirmed

PS5 Digital Edition crosses 1 million units!

Is this the bestselling digital only sku in Japan?

How much did the PSP Go sell?

Supposedly less than 200k units before they stopped keeping track.

Another week going on cruise control pretty much.
Next couple of weeks will have slightly more interesting new releases to look forward to but it's likely that before Pokemon Z-A releases, we ain't about to see much movement here.

Yeah i'm a firm believer that the reason why games like Resident Evil or Final Fantasy used to sell much more 20-30 years ago in Japan compared to today is mostly because Japanese gaming tastes have changed a lot over the years.

I mean if we go back to the time when those kinds of games were at their peak popularity in Japan (PS1 + PS2 generation), Animal Crossing was a low selling, ultra niche game on the N64 in Japan. While nowadays a game like Animal Crossing is the best selling game ever in Japan. That shows how much of Nintendo's success has come organically from Japanese gamers in general just shifting a lot when it comes to what kinds of games they enjoy. We see the same trend when it comes to Pikmin, used to be ultra niche and low selling in Japan and now sell more than FF/RE there.

So you all are expecting RE9 to sale less than RE8? What would it have to sell combined (PC, PS5, and SW2) to not be considered a flop? Doubt most people are expecting it to be a break hit immediately when SW2 needs time to build a massive user base and rebuild the RE brand with the masses.

A bit surprised at how stable the Switch 2 is being right now though that should change soon. For the past couple weeks its performance is surprisingly the least interesting out of the three main console platforms.

I hope that the PS5 can maintain sales above 20,000 until the launch of Ghost of Yotei.

It won't. This week and last week saw a bump in sales due to the 10k yen discount sale from 9/4 - 9/11. It will most likely be 10k or less next week again.

The Switch 2 seems to be at 40k - 50k a week now until Pokemon ZA comes out and the Holiday weeks. Should be able to end the year at 3.5 million minimum.
Switch seems to be 20k a week and will get one more holiday boost this year before falling off next year.
PS5 got a decent boost the past 2 weeks due to the 10k yen sale, but will go back to it's 10k weekly sales until the holiday weeks. Ghost of Yotei I think won't do much.
Xbox being Xbox as usual.

It's a chicken and egg situation; a big part of the reason say Final Fantasy lost a lot of its selling power is cos Gen Z Japanese gamers didn't grow up with it like Millennials did cos they had a DS/PSP/3DS rather than a PS3/PS4.

Similar for RE where the latest mainline games weren't on the systems most Japanese owned, leading to them not having as much of a nostalgic attachment to the series.

I'm expecting it to sell only marginally better than RE8. The game will not be a flop, because the rest of the world will carry it hard

Edit: Also, there will be no long-term recover for either IP in Japan, only marginal increases in physical sales due to being available for a bigger userbase

You can bookmark this post and come back in a few years when FF 17 and RE 10 comes out. I will have no issue to stand corrected if I'm wrong. Don't think it will be the case though
