Forums - Gaming - Square-Enix Basically Confirms Final Fantasy 17 Will Be Multi-Plat (Switch 2, XBox, PS, etc.)

With the recent release of Final Fantasy XVI on Xbox and the launch of Switch 2, have Square Enix's future launch plans changed? Final Fantasy XVI was a launch exclusive on PS5, so will you go fully multi-platform for future Final Fantasy titles?

For sure, this was also announced by our president and CEO, Takashi Kiryu. Our Square Enix strategy is that we want to go multi-platform for our future titles. As you have seen, in terms of titles released from our Creative Studio III, we announced that Final Fantasy Tactics Ivalice Chronicles will be releasing on September 30, multi-platform. It is safe to assume that we will strive for multi-platform release moving forward.

There it is in case you needed it basically confirmed. I know there was some debate about this on this forum with some not believing Final Fantasy 17 would be a Switch 2 title for instance. It also does sound like FF16 will be coming to Switch 2 also:

I expect the same for the next dragonquest really. But what about the next Kingdom Hearts? Could that be a day1 multiplatform release, let's wait and see.

Both franchises last releases were half multiplat at the start. DQ11 was 3DS/PS4 in Japan and then PS4/PC when it released worldwide. Then KH3 was PS4/XOne when it released. Recent Final Fantasy games were the biggest to not get any sort of multiplat release at launch. With all these games now being on a variety of systems, everything is pointing towards FF17, DQ12, and KH4 being fully multiplat at launch.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Xbox/PC is a given but just as FFXVI has been released on Xbox now but does not have a Switch 2 announcement , I don't think multiplatform means day and date on Switch 2. And similar to FFXVI I presume it'll be more a case of can we get a version working (answer will be yes with enough time and resources)

Was always quite obvious from the new CEO and his latest speeches that they're done with Sony's moneyhat tactics with the franchise.

Doesn't mean they won't get exclusive marketing rights though lol.

I wonder now, is CBIII the one working also on FFXVII ? Considering the whole debacle over their producers views on the franchise and what he wants from the battle systems, hopefully they'll right their wrongs and reintroduce actually meaning proper RPG progression.

Multiplatform doesn't mean 'all platforms', it means multiple platforms, i.e. more than one. I'm sure Square Enix will be interested in bringing the game to Switch 2 as well, but mainline Final Fantasy games have been trying to utilize powerful hardware as well as they 'reasonably' can, and I don't think they're going to stop doing that now. That is if they can get the game easily enough on Switch 2, I don't see why they wouldn't do it, but realistically, they're probably going to aim for something that's hard to get to run on Switch 2, so it'll be an afterthought. The game is almost certainly going to release day 1 on next-gen consoles, and getting it to run even on Xbox Series S is probably going to be a struggle. It sounds like it often is even now, when there's no next gen to worry about, and it's not going to get any easier.

It might not even release on current-gen consoles: XVI was released in 2023, so XVII releasing in 2027 would probably be an optimistic estimation due to how long games take to develop these days. It's probably going to come out in 2028-2030 instead, and Square Enix might not feel like it makes sense to release the game on the console we have now.

Good.

This means FF17 will probably target F16 in term of graphical fidelity. The problem of 16 is terrible optimization, hopefully they will be able to squeeze better graphics and better performance in the next entry

I think 17 will be a PS6 title also. The earliest date I can see it releasing is 2029

With Playstation less relevant in Japan than they used to be, there's little sense in keeping a Japanese franchise exclusive to their platform.

Exclusivity in general is growing scarcer nowadays as dev costs rise, with even first party Sony and MS games releasing on competing platforms.

FF in particular is a brand that has lost a great deal of its selling power over the last two decades, so if they want to stem the bleeding it makes sense to give it the widest release possible.
