Steam by a forgone mile. Even Tim Sweeney himself recently admitted the storefront is a buggy mess. Coming up on 7 years the storefront has been around and has no discernible progress that makes it stand out.

PC storefront have to be more than simply a place to buy games. EGS has that basic functionality at most, but that’s it.

You sure about that?

They still dont have a shopping cart lol

They have a shopping cart for a while now.

Ouch.

Personally I don't like Epic because the limit of their creative input into their store is "let's do what Stream does, but force people to use our store by paying for exclusives". Like what all the streaming media sites did to Netflix.... and now there's 20 identical Netflix clones you have to pay for to see the content you want...

The overwhelming majority of my games are on Steam, though GOG would be my preference all else being equal.

However, I did buy a game on the Epic store that turned out to be one of my recent favorites. I wanted to support competition. Unfortunately, I ended up absolutely losing my mind with rage because I had so much trouble trying to play it when I was having an issue with my internet flickering on and off. I had ZERO problems with Steam during that period but the Epic client was beyond frustrating and I ended up telling their support that I wouldn't play another game on their service even if it was free.

Steam, for sure. But GOG is right up there with them, especially with their latest move on mod integration.

Epic tried to buy their way into the market with give-away tactics, instead of actually developing their services. And it shows. Heck; the EA App is almost a better pick.

Love GOG especially on bringing in classics that otherwise wouldnt come out normally across the consoles+Steam.

Like Breath of Fire IV, speaking of which...I gotta go buy that lol.

I tried out the app back in 2023 and it was unbearable. There were so many weird things happening that no other app on my computer was experiencing, some of the icons wouldnt fully load and when I downloaded a game (Fall Guys), it just kept getting interrupted , turning on and off multiple times. Scrolling through the UI was laggy as well, never had this issue , even with Ubisoft or EA's apps.

I havent tried GOG Galaxy, hopefully wont be a headache when I try it in the future lol

Other than some freebies I was interested in like Celeste I've not used EGS at all. Steam is just a way better platform though the weekly freebies are a fantastic feature but I wonder just how much longer they can keep doing that. The temporary exclusivity thing they tried pissed me and a lot of people off but thankfully over the past couple years or so they've been heavily moving away from that and are now focusing more on encouraging developers to release their games on it alongside Steam and publishing games and the latter being exclusive is way easier to swallow than a game intended for Steam getting taken away for a while. Sucks that the next Playdead game is gonna be one of those but with how long it's been since Inside development of it is probably troubled.

I mean, even Tim Sweeney (link) and the general manager of the Epic Store, Steve Allison (link) have said in the last couple that the store needs somw work (my words, not theirs).

So yeah, choosing Steam over EGS is a no brainer in terms of capabilities and ease of use.

GOG is great as well, with my only complain being that, because you can import your game collection from other stores to have it all in one place, it's very hard to know which games are from GOG, Steam, EGS or others, as they're all put together instead of split in groups or by store, at least in the default Grid array (it shows that when going by List array, but I find it less useful).

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Epic has absolutely nothing going for it, in terms of people preferring it. Its only redeeming quality is free games, and that has nothing do with with the service itself. It's really barebones, and last I checked, the app felt really slow. I was annoyed at Epic years ago for trying to moneyhat its service some market share, but I was actually willing to give it a chance if the service improved. But they've been doing pretty much a bunch of nothing for years, so I doubt it can ever become a serious competitor to Steam. Epic wouldn't even need to match Steam, because it's almost impossible, it would just need to show that it respects us and is willing to improve our experience with the service.

Of course ideally I would prefer GOG, because there's no DRM on GOG. But sometimes I can't help wondering about some less important but nice features on Steam. I've also been increasingly worried about the future of Windows, so official Linux support in the Steam client is a huge plus for me, even if I don't use Linux for my gaming PC at the moment. It's something that's been an increasingly important factor for me recently.

GOG

Steam is a close second, and mainly for sharing/gifting games and the workshop/mods, which are much easier and more thorough than on GOG (I don't care about achievements, so dunno how they compare here)

EGS is my very last choice. How very last? It get's even beaten by the effing Windows store of all places, and by a country mile even!

Epic created Fortnite and Fortnite is a cancer on the industry.

On the other hand, Steam let in mountains of shovelware, asset flips, and AI slop, and they have a near monopoly and monopolies are bad.

GOG for the win.
