Epic has absolutely nothing going for it, in terms of people preferring it. Its only redeeming quality is free games, and that has nothing do with with the service itself. It's really barebones, and last I checked, the app felt really slow. I was annoyed at Epic years ago for trying to moneyhat its service some market share, but I was actually willing to give it a chance if the service improved. But they've been doing pretty much a bunch of nothing for years, so I doubt it can ever become a serious competitor to Steam. Epic wouldn't even need to match Steam, because it's almost impossible, it would just need to show that it respects us and is willing to improve our experience with the service.

Of course ideally I would prefer GOG, because there's no DRM on GOG. But sometimes I can't help wondering about some less important but nice features on Steam. I've also been increasingly worried about the future of Windows, so official Linux support in the Steam client is a huge plus for me, even if I don't use Linux for my gaming PC at the moment. It's something that's been an increasingly important factor for me recently.
