I'd like to know more about charging the battery to only 90%. It improves the life expectation of the battery, but at the same time it reduces the playtime per charge by 5-15 minutes depending on the game? Is that the tradeoff?

Essentially, but the range is probably bigger.  I think the official maximum is 6 hours, so 10% of that would be about 36 minutes.

Yes, it could be useful for handheld gamers, who play very much with it and have hundreds of charging cycles.

Just an example, if the battery degradation would be 4% per year when always charging to 100% but only 2% per year when always charging to 90%.

charging to 100%:

  • year 1 = 100%
  • year 2 = 96%
  • year 3 = 92%
  • year 4 = 88%
  • year 5 = 84%
  • year 6 = 80%
  • year 7 = 76%
  • year 8 = 72%
  • year 9 = 68%

charging to 90%:

  • year 1 = 90%
  • year 2 = 90%
  • year 3 = 90%
  • year 4 = 90%
  • year 5 = 90%
  • year 6 = 90%
  • year 7 = 88%
  • year 8 = 86%
  • year 9 = 84%

But if the Switch 2 is a secondary device to you or you don't play it that often, the battery degredation will be lower anyways... probably not worth the limitation in the first years.

Also, if you plan to switch (no pun intended) to an Switch 2 OLED in a few years and sell the launch model, enjoy the 91 - 100% in these first years... the higher battery degredation ain't your problem but the problem of the second hand buyer.

Compared to Switch 1 it feels a lot more premium, in everything from the look of it to the new magnetic Joycon connections to the larger screen.

Setup was relatively painless for a modern device thankfully, (still miss the days of plug and play though) and the graphical bump is substantial.

I'm very happy with it so far.

My thoughts exactly after spending this evening with the console. Switch 1 feels like a toy now...

As far as games go, I'm loving Mario Kart World so far. The concept of racing to the next course is really interesting and free mode is full of secrets and missions. I haven't even touched online yet. So much to unlock, to play, to discover. And those that say it looks just like MK8D really need a new pair of glasses. The difference is substantial.

Gamecube... I played a bit of Wind Waker. First impressions are not very positive: I miss Wind Waker HD visual, gameplay and music enhancements, inverted camera is a pain in the ass to get used to and worst of all: it has significant input lag. There's no fixing my Wii U complaints, but I hope they fix the input lag and the camera in a future update (at least give me an option to change it).

Deltarune... OMFG was the wait worth it. Chapter 3 demolished my heart in the first 5 minutes and proceed to make me laugh like a madman just after that. Not to mention the very noticiable increase in production value. Toby Fox is a fucking genius.

I also tried a few Switch 1 games that struggled to maintain a stable framerate and had dynamic resultions like NEO: TWEWY, Bayonetta 3 and BotW (the forest area). All gone. Everything runs smooth as butter. Obviously the resolution ceiling is what it is in many cases, but the games run at the best of their capabilities and that's great news to me.

Speaking of BotW, I tried the Switch 2 Edition and jesus christ in a bicycle does it look and run like a dream. Those 60fps feel amazing and the bump in resolution + HDR really makes the graphics pop up both in handheld and dock.

All in all, I'm having a great time with the new console, save for some little stains (mainly Wind Waker being terrible). There's so much to play. Very few times I bought a console at launch and had so much shit to play (and so good)!

What is the resolution of the Switch 2 menu on dock ?

No idea but I would guess it's 1080p to match the screen on the device, as Switch 1's menu was 720p to match it's 720p screen.

The battery is as big as the compartment shown there, what you see above is just the foam padding to keep the battery in place... although these batteries are heavily glued on. Same thing happened with the Switch 1:

20 Wh battery (Switch 2) vs. 40 Wh battery (ROG Ally) vs. 80 Wh battery (ROG Ally X):

The trigger buttons of the ROG Ally helped me to scale it right:

I haven't played the Cube version for well over a decade, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but if the right stick is only used for the camera, couldn't you just remap the controls for that stick?

Gotta say, Nintendo did not rest on their laurels with this machine.

The Switch 1, while a great console, feels like a toy in comparison in terms of build quality.

Switch 2 is just a much more well made device that feels more like a serious piece of hardware, similar to how Switch 1 felt like a more serious piece of hardware than Wii U/3DS.

Oh no ...

The Switch 3 is about to be serious now, is that it ?!

😜

Anyway, I honestly don't know why I didn't expect it but after completing my first course in MK World, I had the prompt for Free Roam mode in the bottom corner of the screen. Thought it would redirect me to another menu but no, it simply let me take control of the character auto-running in the background instantly.

Got kinda mind blown there. Transition being so insanely smooth !

Yeah the faster load times and transitions in Switch 2 games are definitely a nice upgrade over Switch 1. Fast Fusion is almost cartridge-fast while Mario Kart World loads into cups in a few seconds.

Even Cyberpunk with its complex world loads relatively briefly, whereas Witcher 3 on Switch 1 in comparison could take over a minute to load into a save or when fast traveling.
