It was backwards compatible but it wasn’t iterative. An iterative successor would have been a more powerful Wii that had an emphasis on more advanced motion controls, not a tablet controller.

I’m not necessarily saying such a device would have been a smash hit but the strategy and marketing behind Wii U was absolutely not a continuation of Wii.

WiiU was an iterative update to the Wii.

Both used PowerPC, both used Radeon (ArtX vs AMD however), both had motion controls, both ran Wii games with Wii accessories like the sensor bar etc'.

They even shared similar names.

I agree with you about the specs of the console but that’s not what I’m referring to. Wii was designed and marketed around motion controls and playing together (Wii as in WE) with unique experiences not available on other devices while Wii U was centered around a tablet controller catered to individuals (U as is YOU) and had a pretty big focus on getting PS3/360 ports (when those consoles were about to be replaced themselves).

The whole concept of Wii U went against what made Wii successful.

(Was the Wii U and 3DS not precisely this?)

3DS was not a failure as it was profitable for Nintendo.

I think it's bizarre when a console that shifts 75~ million units of hardware is oddly perceived as a failure by people. Like... Really bizarre.

I mean…it did see around a 50% drop from DS. And needed an emergency price cut within a few months of launch. It certainly wasn’t a disaster, but I wouldn’t call it a big success. Maybe a “very lukewarm success” would be an appropriate label…

The Switch 2 is definitely the definition of bigger and better lol. I'm even seeing a lot of posts about Switch 1 games that didn't even receive a patch are now running at 60fps. So it sounds like games are just taking advantage of the better horsepower.

Love how much bigger it is to hold! The first Switch was annoying to hold in long play sessions in handheld.

So basically, a Switch Pro.

Just the spec upgrade alone is next-gen. Pro models are only modest upgrades that still retain most of the core consoles hardware, but upgrades in certain areas and are still capable of running all of that console's games. Like PS4 to PS4 Pro. All the games are able to played on both systems. Switch 1 to Switch 2 is substantial. There's no way the likes of CP2077 could've been made on the Switch 1 for example. Or even seeing how destructible the environments are in DK Bananza, I have a hard time thinking a game like that would've been possible on the Switch 1 either.

So while the older games able to take advantage of the extra horsepower is a nice bonus, the multitude of Switch 2 only games would not be able to play on the Switch 1. The console is deserving of that "2" in the name.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Once the devoted base with money has gotten their hands on it, I think the price point is going to be an issue. Good first year sales, but with this shaky economy...

It will be a huge success.

The console itself is simply great right out of the box. It has the same fast OS as Switch 1 and comes with an improved eShop. The new Joy-Cons attach more sturdily due to the magnets and are also easier to detach while having no risk to come off accidentally. Transfering the data from Switch 1 to Switch 2 was painless and afterwards Switch 2 looks just like your Switch 1 in the main menu. It's such a smooth transition, taking greatness and making it even a bit better. If you liked Switch 1, you'll love Switch 2.

Mario Kart World also delivers. The physics have been reworked, so it plays and feels different to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe instantly while being just as great. Loading times are shorter, so that's another plus.

This piece of hardware in combination with a true killer app on launch day and a lot of complementary software to choose from may be the best executed launch of a console ever. The only downside is the shortage of physical games, but the shitty behavior of most third parties can be quite easily ignored when Nintendo has lined up a bunch of great games for the rest of this year. Whether or not Switch 2 will sell better than Switch 1 is up in the air, but Nintendo is definitely putting their best foot forward here. Haters are gonna suffer.

Both extremes are unwise. Saying it's going to flop is, but so is saying things like "best executed launch ever" or "haters are gonna suffer". You're basically acting exactly the same way that the people you're criticizing are. You're taking an extreme position without any evidence to back it up, just like them.

I've said this to the point of nausea, but it's worth repeating one more time: we will not know what this system is going to be until a minimum of one year from now. Two years, we'll know for sure. So imo, it's best to adopt a cautious opinion, be it positive or negative, than it is an extreme one. Anything else is just asking for it.

I would call it a success on the basis it was profitable.

I mean... Literally every single Nintendo console ever released, including the outgoing Switch (According to current vgchartz estimates) has sold less than the DS.
That doesn't make any of them failures in any capacity.

If a console is profitable, then it's a success.

Ignoring the existence of the virtual boy (Can we even regard that as a console?) the WiiU marks Nintendo's only real failed mainstream console, handheld or fixed.

WiiU had motion controls. Motion/Gyro was actually what I hated most about it as I felt it ruined games like StarFox.

WiiU is an iterative update to the Wii. Including name.

It's also why I am not rebuying Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.
Not sure if Switch 1 portable games run at portable resolution on the Switch 2 in portable mode.

Love mine. The screen is massive, bright, with great color the device doesn't feel heavy. Massive upgrade from Switch 1. CyberPunk looks amazing (currently running in performance mode). Was able to upload my save file from my gaming PC and continue.

It's LCD. It doesn't have great colour or contrasts.

Big and Bright however are both genuine strengths.

I can act this way because I am right and I have the evidence; there's nothing extreme about this. All you are doing is begging for more time for the doubters because you are one yourself.

It’s like you are deliberately misunderstanding/ignoring key parts of what I’m saying. Wii was based entirely around the Wii Remotes, Wii U was based around the Wii U Gamepad which are completely different.

An iterative update to Wii would have been a console where the default control scheme were updated Wii Remotes, not a tablet.

So far, so good. Currently back to playing Pokémon Scarlett on my Switch 2 now that it runs in 60fps! Will play Tears of the Kingdom after I finish the DLC content.
