It was backwards compatible but it wasn’t iterative. An iterative successor would have been a more powerful Wii that had an emphasis on more advanced motion controls, not a tablet controller.
I’m not necessarily saying such a device would have been a smash hit but the strategy and marketing behind Wii U was absolutely not a continuation of Wii.
