I mean…it did see around a 50% drop from DS. And needed an emergency price cut within a few months of launch. It certainly wasn’t a disaster, but I wouldn’t call it a big success. Maybe a “very lukewarm success” would be an appropriate label… |
I would call it a success on the basis it was profitable.
I mean... Literally every single Nintendo console ever released, including the outgoing Switch (According to current vgchartz estimates) has sold less than the DS. That doesn't make any of them failures in any capacity.
If a console is profitable, then it's a success.
Ignoring the existence of the virtual boy (Can we even regard that as a console?) the WiiU marks Nintendo's only real failed mainstream console, handheld or fixed.

I agree with you about the specs of the console but that’s not what I’m referring to. Wii was designed and marketed around motion controls and playing together (Wii as in WE) with unique experiences not available on other devices while Wii U was centered around a tablet controller catered to individuals (U as is YOU) and had a pretty big focus on getting PS3/360 ports (when those consoles were about to be replaced themselves). The whole concept of Wii U went against what made Wii successful. |
WiiU had motion controls. Motion/Gyro was actually what I hated most about it as I felt it ruined games like StarFox.
WiiU is an iterative update to the Wii. Including name.

It’s like you are deliberately misunderstanding/ignoring key parts of what I’m saying. Wii was based entirely around the Wii Remotes, Wii U was based around the Wii U Gamepad which are completely different.
An iterative update to Wii would have been a console where the default control scheme were updated Wii Remotes, not a tablet.
