Forums - Movies & TV - Snow White live action remake flops at the box office

Disney's latest live action remake has managed to bring in just $148 million at the global box office after 2 weeks, against a reported budget of $270 million.

Apparently its poor performance has even put the planned live action remake of Tangled on hold.

Gee, I wonder why...

Haven't watched it. Neither do I plan to.

What sucks though is that they’re likely going to draw the wrong conclusions.

It might be that this will be that one straw that broke the camel's back - apparently, there was a bigwigs meeting in Disney where things like "how the fuck did we let this happen?" was thrown around.

Your two stars being one pro-palestine, one pro-israel. Than having one group upset they didn't cast dwarf actors and another upset that there are even dwarfs in it. Then you have the lead actress disrespecting the original source material.

Ignoring all that going on I still don't think there were that many clamouring for a remake of snow white, especially not to the point this film should have been given a massive $250 million budget!

What were Disney thinking.

If this does slow Disney's release of live-action remakes something good would have come of it though. The Moana remake is the funniest. A film from 2016 being remade already is hilarious.

Probably the single most predictable event in the entertainment industry so far this year. It's been one disaster after another, on top of no one asking for this to be made. The focus on live-action remakes in and on itself just shows that Disney have failed to understand the draw and charm of their own animated features to begin with. It's becoming clear that Disney needs new leadership across the board (pun intended), too many mistakes are being made way too often.

Really, the entire concept of Disney live-action remakes has an uphill battle from the start. Too similar to the old one, and people will complain that it's a pointless cash-grab. Change it to any significant degree, and you'll have people complaining that you're screwing around with a sacred classic.

Ironically, the Disney movies that would benefit most from a live-action remake are the mid-tier ones that had obvious flaws in their original release, such as The Aristocats, The Black Cauldron, or Oliver and Company. But then, Disney probably thought there wouldn't be enough audience interest in seeing those remade seeing how the originals were so... well, mid-tier.
