Forums - Movies & TV - Most impressive visual effects

The art of visual effects has come a long way, allowing fantastical worlds and scenarios to be brought to life on our screens.

Of all the movies you have seen, which one had the most impressive visual effects to you, and what about it impressed you so?

It's Rotoscoped meaning filmed and then painted over but I still think it counts as it was achieved using a vomputer and works so well considering the plot of the film is about dreams.

Have you watched "A Scanner Darkly". Works great there as well as the main character is in a drug haze all movie.

Most impressive visual effects: for CGI I would say Interstellar (2014), for practical effects 2001 Space Oddyssey (1968)

Live-action, Dune: Part Two.

Animation, Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III. spring song --Saber Alter vs. Rider fight scene. Unfortunately you can't find the whole uncut scene on Youtube. Streaming can't really do it justice anyway.

Lots of directors can wow you with a spectacular trick, far fewer can make you not even realize you've been tricked.

Why did Davy Jones Look SO Realistic?

The work on Davy Jones started about 20 years ago and yet he's one of the best-looking CGI characters ever.

The Original Star Wars Trilogy has some of the best practical effects of all-time, especially in Episodes V and VI.

I was always impressed how they did the size differences in the Lord of the Rings movies with the Dwarfs and Hobbits vs. the rest of the cast.

Original Jurassic Park still holds up.

Not looking by modern standards, this has always impressed me:

Thank you for posting this, I watched this movie while high once and could never remember the name. It's nice to be able to see more about it and write my negative review on letterboxd  :)

Jurassic Park, for sure. But nothing will ever top the first Star Wars. Ask anyone that was there. It will easily go down as the be-all, end-all.
