Out of those? Probably a tie between SNES and N64. Although, what the NES did coming from a new company after the crash... that's probably the most impressive.

Post-launch. You had to wait months before another N64 game launched. For months N64 only had 3 games. Yes, good games but even then just 3 while PS1 was pumping them out. Severe drought.

Yeah. I've said this before. I think N64 had higher highs, but PS1 had a far better library on the whole. Of course, it's up to the individual if they prefer a small number of all-time great games vs. thirty really great games. But it's true that N64 had a, er... sparse expanse. lol

SNES slams.

SNES followed by N64

Wii. Best 3D Zelda, best 3D Mario, best 3D Metroid... All in its first year. Absolutely insane.

NES is cheating by having 2+ years of games at launch.

Dead heat between SNES and Wii in the poll so far; both are indeed excellent and I have difficulty choosing between them myself, though if I absolutely had to choose, I'd probably give it to the Wii as Mario Galaxy is the second best game I've ever played, TP and Prime 3 are among my favourites in their series, and Wii Sports was mind-blowing back then.

Nintendo is usually pretty good at getting their consoles off to a strong start.

As we gear up for the first year of Switch 2, which of Nintendo's consoles before the Switch do you think had the best lineup of games in it's first 12 months, and what makes your pick worthy of the top spot?

For the record, here are some of the key titles for each:

NES (Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Excite Bike, Golf, Ice Climber, Wild Gunman, Hogan’s Alley)

SNES (Super Mario World, F-Zero, Street Fighter II, Final Fantasy IV, Contra III, Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts)

N64 (Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, Starfox 64, Mario Kart 64, Pilot Wings 64, Turok)

GC (Luigi’s Mansion, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, Rogue Squadron II)

Wii (Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Wii Sports, Super Paper Mario, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn)

Wii U (New Super Mario Bros U, Nintendoland, Pikmin 3, Call of Duty Black Ops II, ZombiU)

I really think Street Fighter II was a second year release (third, if you count Japan - console in 1990 for JP;1991 for NA;1992 for SFII release). I actually remember the announcement and all the excitement while we were waiting for the release. Great times!

SNES, Wii, N64 are all strong contenders but I think SNES would be my pick. Also, including the Wii U in this poll is cruel.

Signature goes here!

Easily the SNES and Wii. But for me, personally, the Wii by far, as it's the system I bought the most launch year games for.

Apart from the games you listed:
Super Mario Galaxy
Zelda Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime 3
Wii Sports
Super Paper Mario
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn

I also own and liked:
Godfather: Blackhand Edition
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles
Scarface Wii
WarioWare: Smooth Moves
SSX Blur
Tiger Woods 08 (Tiger Woods 07 also came out during launch year)
Elebits
Trauma Center
Sims 2 Castaways
The Simpsons Game
Zack and Wiki
NiGHTs
Geometry Wars
Endless Ocean
Wii Fit* (Checked up on this one, it only came out launch year in Japan)

Wii U, Gamecube, and N64 were rife with droughts during their first year (and really most of their generation) - low numbers of releases, and even fewer games that weren't outdated or inferior ports.

The N64 especially, given it had literal months where no games released: for example, in Europe, Wave Race 64 launched April 29th 1997, the next game to launch on N64 was ISS64 June 1st. And if you think Europe had it bad, North America saw timespans of a month and a half without releases - for example, the next game to release after Doom 64 was War Gods, which came out 6 weeks and 2 days later. In fact, only 22 N64 games released for the entire first year in North America.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

IIRC it was a second year game in Japan, but just fit into the first year of SNES in NA and Europe.

Yeah I considered not even including it tbh, maybe I shouldn't have, but maybe somebody really really likes ZombiU and Pikmin 3?

I also enjoyed Excite Truck, Call of Duty 3, and Medal of Honour Heroes 2 from Wii's first year.
