Last year the game that would go on to win most of the GOTY awards, Astrobot, wasn't revealed until a May SOP ahead of its release in September. So at this point in the year we didn't even know about the existence of the game that would dominate the awards conversation.

That got me thinking about whether the game that will eventually end up winning most of the 2025 GOTY awards has already been revealed or not? Do you think the game that will win the most awards has already been announced, or even released? Or will it be a game that hasn't even been announced yet.

GTA VI is probably one of the favorites to win this year given the series' pedigree and popularity. However it might be a game that hasn't even been announced yet. For instance with the pending release of the Switch 2 there are bound to be several Nintendo exclusives that haven't been announced yet. For instance if a new 3D Mario releases for Switch 2 this year that could be a contender.

Hard to say because if you wouldve made this thread at this same time last year my reply wouldve been yes, because while I definitely think Astrobot is a great game and I definitely enjoyed it, it wasnt my personal GOTY and it wasnt the game I expected to win GOTY, and my 2024 GOTY had already been announced by then.

So imma get ahead of myself and just say yes, cause regardless of what comes afterwards, at the moment I expect Monster Hunter Wilds to be GOTY.

Too early to say but this makes it more fun, so I'll go ahead and say GTA6, if it doesn't release this year, then 3D Mario, if it doesn't release this year, then Metroid Prime 4.

I got a good feeling on Doom: The Dark Ages on being a strong contender, but in a year of GTA 6, MH Wilds, and I have no doubt Nintendo is holding an ace up their sleeve, there's some really strong competition this year.

If GTAVI makes it this year, then its probably going to be GOTY for many sites.

Maybe not. I imagine we have some surprises in store for this year. I'm expecting Nintendo to drop a new 3D Mario game. that will be huge. But besides that we have Crimson Desert which i'm personally really excited for. it looks to be a really ambitious action-adventure game.

And of Course GTA VI. Doom will be great no doubt but i don't know if it can beat the other games for GOTY. There's Metroid Prime 4 but it will really have to be much better than it's predecessors in order to win.

Nothing holds a chance qt GTA6, that game could release like TLOU2 and still sweep. Now, has it been revealed, perhaps not but I'd almost certainly say so since only Sony would hold onto a game this late, maybe their Cory Barlog game or some such will be revealed after Yotei releases. Yotei might even get it if GTA6 is delayed, if they build on ecerything from Tsushima and have taken notes from Elden Ring and some other games that have released since like Stellar Blade then I can't see why not. Tsushima was close to being worthy of GOTY, imo as it was so I think it only takes a few tweaks, some TLC and better writing (it's not looking good their, DA Veilgaurd writers are on it) and dive deeper into the systems while pulling back more away from the Ubisoft formula and doing things their new unique way and have figured out how Elden Ring enhanced those same ideas then, yeah. I know one thing for sure, Yotei is winning best art direction.

Funny you using TLoU2 like a joke while TLoU was the game that vastly outperformed GTAV in GOTY awards.
