2025 vs 2015 will be interesting. But I suppose we'll have to play Xenoblade Chronicles X first to see if the Switch version equals, exceeds, or falls short of the experience in 2015 on Wii U. As much as I didn't enjoy the console, that one (and perhaps the Wii U Wii Fit game) were games I did enjoy quite a lot.

I also feel like I didn't give Animal Crossing on Wii U a fair shake, I quit it early (for some forgotten reason), but I was enjoying it.
Earthbound was also a very nice surprise on Wii U - but overall, I felt Wii U had the weakest catalogue content. Switch has surpassed the Wii with its EShop and subscription offerings...

And if I may end this post on a small tangent the EShop/Subscription is still missing Chrono Trigger... I mean, I even Apple TV has that game - but somehow it has skipped the Switch this generation. I was hoping for a Pixel Remaster of the original game as I'm not particularly a fan of the additional content in the later ports - often stuff just felt either shoe-horned in or replacing the mysterious edges of the universe/story with unremarkable stuff. So a Pixel Remaster of the original game or a straight port of the SNES (same as Wii VC version) would be great.

Switch's 2025 third-party is pretty much guaranteed to be better. Pretty sure Minecraft was one of the few third-party games on Wii U in 2015 that wasn't shovelware.

First-party is much more subjective. But from what we know far, Switch has games like

-Donkey Kong Country Returns HD

-Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition

-Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

-Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Wii U had (to name some): Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and then some derided first-party games.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Considering the changes we've seen for the Definitive Edition and the new content (back from the cut content they had to do). I'd say it's already exceeding my expectations since I was just thinking about of a small up-res port at first. Even better if we get a patch for the Switch 2 specifically !

As for the topic in broad terms. Didn't begin playing on my WiiU before summer of 2016 so it goes to say that I have no affinity with the year 2014 in question. 2024 is fresher in my mind and I've got a couple of great experiences that'll stick as some of the best the Switch had to offer.

Honestly ... Just do a coin flip

On the third party side Switch 2025 is looking remarkably solid; Sonic Racing Crossworlds, Little Nightmares III, Atelier Yumia and Resleriana, MOUSE, Professor Layton, Civilization 7, Star Overdrive, Guilty Gear Strive, Mandragora, Amnesia Rebirth and The Bunker, etc.

Thanks for rekindling my memory because ai low key forgot that Layton and Little Nightmares 3 were coming this year.

This is filling my niche pretty nicely already :3

I voted for Switch 2024.  Ironically, I played the Wii U more in 2014 than I played Switch in 2024, but a lot of that had to do with the fact that I picked up a Wii U for Christmas 2013, and so my family was playing all of 2012-2014's content in 2014.  Mario Kart 8 was ok in 2014, but I liked Mario Kart Wii better.  However, Mario Kart 8 in 2024 is actually the best Mario Kart ever, simply because they've added so much more content over the years.  The Wii U didn't have anything else in 2014 that has held up for me in the long run.

The reason I love 2024 is the reason why I love most Nintendo consoles.  I usually don't like to play third party games on Nintendo systems when they first release.  Instead I way quite a few years and then buy a ton of them cheap just so I can try out a ton of games at once.  What I've been doing for the past month or so is trying out a big stack of Wii games that I bought for cheap.  It's so much fun.  What I've found on Nintendo systems is there are usually a lot of great hidden gems among the third party games, but reviewers usually aren't very good at pointing out which ones are actually good.  In the end I just buy a ton, and try them out and quickly put about 3/4 of them aside.  But that last 1/4 has a lot of fun experiences in them.  I'm sure I'll be doing the same sort of thing with Switch third party games several years from now.  2024 had a ton of Switch third party games release, and that is exactly what I want.

Switch third party support right now beats any year from the Wii U.
