PS4 was a ugly too in my view; not as bad as PS5 or PS3 Super Slim, the materials were attractive at least, but the way the whole thing was on a slanted angle just made it look wonky and awkward to me. Straighten it out and it'd be fine.

Then it would look like a VCR like Xbox One the console people mocked the most that gen for its appearance. PS4 looked fine. Kinda looks like a big Wii when vertical.

The OG Xbone just looked boring rather than actively bad, PS4 actually looked worse to me due to the weird slanted design. Not a good gen for console designs, Wii U looked merely decent too; Xbox One S and X looked decent at least.

PS4 should've been bigger. Like PS4 Pro big. Part of why it was so damn loud was because the heatsink should've been just a little bigger, the fan should've been way bigger, and it needed more open space for air to move more freely. The case was to small and the internals were to compact and tight.

Now if you take this into account, and add in making the case just a completely squared off box, it wouldn't have been all that much different than the XB1, like Leynos said. While the case should've been bigger, it definitely would've needed the angle to distinguish itself, like PS4 Pro. Personally I do like the angular design.

This is part of the reason why they went with the PS5 design as it is. Can you imagine a squared off rectangle the size of OG PS5? Now that would've gotten meme'd to death by the comparisons to XB1. Now SNY could've done something like split those squared off rectangles up into smaller pieces, but then you've basically got another PS2 or XB1X.

PS5 needed something different, and that's what we got. Though for PS6 I wouldn't be surprised if they go back to a somewhat more squared off design again. I'd actually guess it'll try to incorporate both, like PS3 did, with some squared off and some curved and rounded.

It's the Ps3 I hate the design language that was popular at the time of its release. The Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 are for me the ugliest generation of consoles ever.

The 360 Elite though and the PS3 slim (horizontal) looked pretty good, right? Dam, I lived the look of the Elite, perhaps the best looking console ever imo.

I agree, both those consoles looked good. What I find quite humorous, is it seems like the majority of people like these two models the best overall that gen, and it also seems like SNY took some inspiration from the OG 360, while MS took some inspiration from the OG PS3.

Oh, yeah. I didn't see that before but now that you mention it it does look like they copied each other homework.

I don't know, dude. I mean, we do live in a world where the PS3 Super Slim exists. That thing is just butt-ugly, and came right on the heels of Sony's best-looking console, the first PS3 Slim (which to me is the only nice-looking Sony console). There's just something off about that slightly recessed top with the corrugated texture. At least the PS5 tries to do something interesting.
