I really think the disc drive bulge was purposely done to push digital sales. I also think it didn't work out as planned because of inflation. I think SNY initially wanted consumers to buy the digital edition, but because of inflation that would've meant taking a much bigger loss on hardware. I think SNY purposely marketed the disc edition much more so for this reason, and they also certainly didn't go out of their way to make sure there were plenty of digital edition SKU's available over the first 2-3 years.
They totally could've made some relatively minor changes to the body to incorporate the disc drive so it didn't look like a bulge or afterthought, but I think that's exactly what they were aiming for when designing it.
The OG model and it's two way stand was a smart move and quite consumer friendly for SNY. That's not really normal for them. Not having a stand with the Pro, especially at it's price, is the complete opposite and really anti consumer though.

PRO -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.
PS5 - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.
PRO -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
