Forums - Sony Discussion - Is the PS5 PRO an utterly useless device at launch? Reviews are out now.

PS5 PRO

Worth the money 24 34.78%

Waste of money 45 65.22%

Total:69

With no mid gen upgrade from XB, if this gen only lasts 8 years or less, most, including SNY, are going to look back and wish the base PS5 had been 8TF and $399 because PS5 would have 5-10 million more console sales by now, plus Pro would be much more worth it.
If the gen only lasts 8 years or less, then Pro will be mostly useless.
If the gen lasts 10 years, then Pro will end up being worth it.

Yeah, getting rid of artiifacting is pretty much the biggest boon of the console, I suppose it comes down to how sensitive you are to it. Oddly enough, It bothers me for about 10 minutes and then I don't notice it anymore at all albeit from what I seen of Wu Kong, I don't think I'd get used to it being that bad.

I imagine there will be some late gen titles that'll look and run really poorly on the base PS5 so the Pro will start really making a difference probably 2026 onwards. Though it seems the performance mode for Monster Hunter Wilds might look crappy so perhaps that'll start next year.

It'll probably start next year yeah, if they've had the PRO long enough to make better use of it over these pitiful updates, if not then definitely with GTA6 which will probably be 2026 now that R* are dead silent.

Well, I mean it's useless at launch, depending on how long devs have had it, it should theoretically become something that could be worth it even if the gen lasts only till 2028, especially is it gets a sale. That's 3-4 years of better game experiences (hoping that devs make use of it better than they are now) and give the possibility to wait out the cross generational period safe and sound for a bit while the PS6 is out of stock for two years.

Even if next Gen starts in 2028 it only starts for a very lucky few.

I'm pretty sure there were leaks long ago saying devs had new hardware they were playing with, which would've been Pro. If they were correct, which looks like they were, devs who had it, should've had plenty of time.

Better experiences sure, but how much better for how much more money? Having a top tier steak with gold leaf sprinkled on it would be a better experience, but would that really be a more useful meal, especially at the cost?

Next gen can't start until the hardware can be reasonably more powerful at $499 or less. Until that's possible, there's no point in moving on from PS5 (Pro).

Unless you sit unreasonably close to the TV or have a 90+ foot TV set/projector. Sitting at a reasonable 10 feet from my 50 inch I can't see shit all difference between fidelity and RT performance mode in Rachet and clank which is the lowest resolution setting against the highest.

This sounds more like a you thing than anything else, no offense. People can already tell the difference between the existing fidelity and performance modes, and at its most basic use the PRO merges these 2 together.

If someone can't tell the difference, then that's fine. it just means that the upgrades from PSSR aren't for them. But they will be for many users who want the best performance from games they own on PS5. PS4 Pro even attracted new users into the PS4 ecosystem, so Sony expects this to happen with the PS5 Pro.

But the most important thing about the Pro is being able to work with newer tech without having to wait an entire gen to do so. Sony can release PSSR 1.0 now, and then have PSSR 2.0 or 3.0 or whatever ready for the PS6 launch because they would've had tangible real-life data to help train and update the feature set.

The increased price would also include things like the 2tb SSD and the addition of wifi 7, making the device future proof even after the PS6 launches. PSSR will continue to improve over time so even crossgen PS5/ PS6 games will see potentially noticeable gains in on the PS5 Pro.

It's ultimately just a high-end version of a PS5. People can just get a slim if they don't want to spend the cash on a Pro, just like with the PS4.

I dont really like any of these mid-gen update consoles. Developers will just up the graphics and not the performance for newer games anyway.

Jesus I can't and I have 20/20 vision and have really directed it. Try it. Stand at a distance from your TV, one that is comfortable and try to see the difference in detail, you'll be surprised how close you have to get. There's a slight pop to things sure but detail isn't lost going performance. Watching YouTube comparisons on your phone is more accurate even with the loss from compression and the bit rate because you're closer to the screen.

Not when 70% are using performance modes, they cater to the majority.

I edited my original post to be a bit more neutral. Sorry, I realise now it came across a little too direct on you. My apologies.

I mean, I'm not dismissing that this may be true for you and potentially a lot of other ppl. But I also feel this is very subjective. It's like how some ppl don't really feel the difference btw 30 and 60fps to be all that major. And I don't think it's a vision issue. But I am confident ppl will be able to tell the difference.

There shouldnt be an option. Especially not on exclusive games. If the developer cant make games look and run great on the console, then the problem is with them and not the console.
