Tomb Raider, and I recall the PS1 version scored higher than the Saturn version in EGM magazine, which led to me getting a PS1 in the first place.
Gosh, how I miss the reviews of Sushi-X.
Digimon World.
Coming from my Master System to my cousin Mega Drive and my best friend SNES, the first time I saw Digimon World running on a PS1 it was insane.
All those Digimon from the TV show there in 3D, you had to take care of them like a Tamagotchi, train them, and could battle openly in the maps with other Digimon, it was insane to me.
Wipeout.
Now admittingly, we got it with the PS1 but my god, so was quite a leap from SNES to PS1 but up til then, racing games looked like Mario card or Road Rash (I had not seen Daytona in an arcade yet).
Then this futurist, awesome soundtrack combat racing game appeared. with dynamic flowing tracks that were so fast I could not even understand what an airbrake was.
What a leap.
Hmm, pie.
Final Fantasy VIII. I saw it first at my friend's house, and I pretty much immediately knew I had to get the game. It was just unlike anything else I had ever played up to that point. Looked amazing, had a very intriguing setting, and the best music I'd heard in a video game up to that point in time.
Crash
The art style worked quite well to a point characters and environment didn't look like a bunch of strange polygons
The 3D controls were immensity tight and satisfying to play
I've played a lot PS1 games, but I always knew they were not good. They were the best devs could do at their time, and I respect their efforts but I just can't get myself to play any of them anymore
But Crash look and play very smoothly even for a PS1 game, and was surprisingly nice to play even many years later. Crash is my pick
A good number of those... probably my favorite generation. But if I had to pick just one, it would definitely be Silent Hill. I must've replayed it countless times over the years, and it never ceases to amaze me. The story, atmosphere, puzzles, music, and lore... I consider it a masterpiece and my favorite game of all time.
Two games for me.
Wipeout and Battle Arena Toshinden
Wipeout was initially cool and a fast racing game.
BAT was the first 3D fighter on home console that didn’t suck.
When I first played Street Fighter Alpha and saw just how close it was to the arcade with its large characters, tons of colors and crisp sound, I knew this console was not going to be just another 3DO or CDi to me. But it was Resident Evil when I took notice of the greatness of the Playstation. My friends and I rented that game so many times because so many of the copies were scratched, causing the game to hang up in spots. Took us forever to finally get through it and the sequel made a bunch of improvements but Resident Evil was the beginning of what would become one of my favorite IPs in gaming.
