Forums - Politics Discussion - 2800 people injured, at least 12 dead and 170 in critical condition in Pager explosions. Hezbollah blames Israel.

Hezbollah pagers compromised in a ‘major state operation’

Elijah Magnier, a military and political analyst, explained how the pagers used in the attack on Hezbollah members were compromised.

“There is an explosive – a type of PETN – that has been embedded within the pager electronic circuit, showing an advanced level of technical expertise and the involvement of a state-level intelligence agency,” Magnier told Al Jazeera from Brussels.

“The shipment was on its way, not directly to Lebanon, because it’s forbidden for Lebanon to receive these kinds of devices, and stopped on the harbour nearby for three months. And according to the Hezbollah investigation, that was enough time for the Israelis to plant the explosive that is very highly explosive.”

Magnier also explained how the explosions took place.

“The way the Israelis did it is they sent a message to these pagers. And with the message, there were errors. Three times errors. And the people needed to look at it and the pager started vibrating. And the pager exploded. This is why more than 300 people lost both hands and many others lost one eye or two eyes, while 150 others lost part of their stomach.

The investigators were able to reach these conclusions from the pagers that did not explode, Magnier said.

“Because they were thousands unexploded, others that burned and there were some failures in the trigger system of the pager and that allowed the investigators to reconnect the dots and understand how this happened,” he said.

What. How and why did their pagers explode. I don't understand. How was over 2000 people injured. This is the strangest story I've ever seen. What, you mean a foreign nation could hack Samsung or apple and blow them? Is this what this is saying. What in the fuck.

War never changes my ass. War has changed. This is insane. It's worse than Stuxnet.

Oh, someone planted explosives in the pagers. That's even more nuts. What a wild operation. Could they not have added a tracker and a mic and gotten more value out of it installed of hurting civilians. These people are terrorists, I don't feel sorry for them nut I do feel sorry for the innocents injured aroubd them.

I'll see myself out.

The Western world has largely gotten rid of pagers, but they're still used in poorer countries typically. I remember working with a guy several years ago who immigrated from Sudan and he always had a pager on him. He said that's just what many people use because they can't afford a smartphone. So they have the classic pager and a regular cellphone. Pagers are even still used in the medical field at times as well.

But this is still terrible to hear. Mankind's ability to take each other out knows no bounds.

False. They are still extremely prevalent and are still used.

I use them.

Israel proves again they are one of the most capable nation in regards to warfare. Given they are under constant military pressure and have to be innovative.

I wonder how this is seen in regards to Geneva conventions and other war time treaties. Not that it matters in detail, nations will break these codes if they see fit, but I wonder. For one Hezbollah isn't a national military, but a rebel group or terrorist group. That can have influence in these treaties as they often assume the participants in a war are nations. I also don't know how many civilians were hit with this. Also some of these injuries seem gruesome, it seems that it was more likely to be badly hurt than outright killed.

Anyways, don't get on Israels bad side would be the takeaway here I think.

Flame throwers aren't allowed in war but hey how about using small explosives to bomb people's hands/arms away? And that without knowing where this will happen because those people using them could be anywhere when it happens. They could drive their kid to school, sit in a bus or stay on a supermarket cashier so that there is absolutely no way you even try to prevent that many good people will also lose their eyes or something else...

And this will change absolutely nothing to the positive. If at least this would be the goal but it obviously isn't.

The goal, Netanyahu's goal, is to drag the USA into a regional war in the ME. He keeps provoking Iran and Hezbollah trying to escalate the tit for tat war on the Lebanon border. Hezbollah has been targeting military objectives in Northern Israel since Israel invaded Gaza. They vow not to stop until there is a ceasefire in Gaza.

Israel has been hitting back (times 4) and carried out many assassinations, usually targeting cars or motorbikes with missiles or drones.

Lebanon is home to some 270,000 Palestinian refugees, while Israel still occupies the Golan Heights and Shebaa farms. Hence all the support for Hezbollah in Lebanon. It's seen there as a resistance group.

This mass attack is another act of desperation from Netanyahu to stay in power. He has corruption charges hanging over his head and as soon as the war is over he will also be investigated for letting Oct 7 happen and all the screw-ups during the response. Plus he has an arrest warrant from the ICC hanging over his head.

So he goes on trying to escalate the war with Lebanon, accusing Iran of smuggling terrorists and weapons into the West Bank, targeting Syria, while raiding / destroying the West Bank and continuing to bomb Gaza.

And yes innocent bystanders got hurt as well with 2 children killed by the pagers.

Medical staff, children among those killed in pager blasts: Health Ministry

Lebanon’s Minister of Health Firass Abiad has held a media conference in Beirut on the situation in the aftermath of the pager blasts.

Abiad said many of those carrying the pagers were civilians. At least 12 people have been killed, including four medical staff, an eight-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy.

The attack showed that Israel was “steering away from a diplomatic solution,” Abiad said. “We have to be ready and alert.” The minister said the biggest challenge was to bring medical sector to a “situation of preparedness”, which includes increasing stockpiles of medicines and fuel.

Hospitals also needed to recover from the massive influx of patients overnight. Abiad said each hospital received 70 to 100 patients in the aftermath of the attack, which was “massive for any country”.

It does sound like explosives, but it also appears the explosives were only planted on Hezbollah owned pagers.

This is one detail I'd like to know about, because 2800+ people sounds like a lot of civiilians were impacted.

“Even if the attacks seem to have been targeted, they had heavy, indiscriminate collateral damages among civilians, including children among the victims,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement Wednesday

Its described as collateral damage, but I wonder if all pagers truly only went to Hezbollah members.

Assuming its for your job, but what is the reasoning for using them over an old phone?
