Forums - Gaming Discussion - Quantity of games per year and per system with exclusives as well (according to Wikipedia)

Which was your favorite time period for gaming ?

5th generation (1993 - 2000) 9 25.71%

6th generation (2000 - 2006) 9 25.71%

7th generation (2006 - 2013) 7 20.00%

8th generation (2013 - 2020) 5 14.29%

9th generation (2020 - now) 5 14.29%

Total:35

I've made a chart of the Quantity of the games released over the years according to Wikipedia, from 5th generation onwards. As we can see from the launch of the 8th generation of consoles, the games every year become less and less, with harder development, needing more time to develop a single game, and more expenses around the game development. For 2024, the number of games is close to 200, however that will change once the year finish, and everything there is to release, actually release, but given the trend, the chances are there will be less than 400 games for the year.

One quick Google search - 14431 games have been released on Steam...in 2023.

So, that Wiki is taking into account...something.

I think it shows console releases. Maybe also only physical releases.

That's not accurate to digital stores. Not even close. Sure it works until about 2013 as a scale but after '08 ish, the graph should increase every year and go some what exponential taking into account Nintendo Eshop, PSN, Steam and Xbox live. Might even me more than 20k the last few years.

If you can give me more on point source go on. I can't find other list for the games over the years that is proven more than wikipedia on the web with included info for the digital ones as well. If there is source with more legit info, I will edit the chart right away.

Probably...since amount of games released digitally has become...staggering...to the point that it resembles white noise.

Idk, it'd be an insane task to track all those games. There is info on what is added to Steam yearly but everything else, idk where you'd find the figures. I can't find any info on the Eshop but from what I see it's a LOT being added. This problem gets even harder to track cause what games on Eshop are duplicates of Steam games. A lotta the indies that make it to Switch were on steam first and if they do well on Switch they tend to make it to PS/Xbox. I'd say you have an impossible task on your hands. You could probably do this for one console at a time quite easily bit the ven diagram of everything that crosses over and eliminating those over the course of 30 plus years would be literally quite impossible I'd reckon.

Edit: Steam would be the best bet to track as it would overlap with the consoles the most but there is a lotta shovel ware on there that makes for one hell of an inflated number but games are games. Where do you draw the line? Do you count mobile games too? This is actually fascinating, I'd like to see it done.

I am making one about every single console now .. it will be uploaded to the original post soon.

And wikipedia does not tell if those games are mobile, console, pc or all. but since it's page for the videogames in general I think is for all. Digital releases may not be included, but they are even harder to find since there is delisted games all over the time, there is overlapping across the platforms as you mentioned, and also there is many games that are both released digitally and physically. So the best I can do is the info I can get from wikipedia.
