Hardware sales are down 0.9 million year over year for the quarter.

PS5 Versus PS4

For the 1st quarter of the 4th full fiscal year (orange) the 2.4 million the PS5 shipped is 0.9 million down on PS4's 3.3 million and after 15 quarters the PS5 totals 61.7 million compared to 63.5 million for the PS4. This means launch aligned the PS5 is 1.8 million behind PS4.

Sony over shipped the PS5 in Q4 2023/2024. Which is why the gap is now particularly big. However I expect the gap between PS5 and PS4 to grow for the rest of PS5 remaining years on the market.

you're forgetting that there's still GTA 6 and several big games to come out in 2025 and 2026. Santa Monica games, Naught Dog, Wolverine, Monster Hunter and other games will help boost PS5 sales

I'm still content with last gen for PS and Xbox. There is nothing truly screaming for me to upgrade, and it seems others feel the same.

I find interesting PS5 is doing better in Americas and Asia and worse in Europe

It's the same for Xbox I think

Maybe it's just a matter of demographic changes, Europe is a market of older people less inclined to upgrade and satisfied with playing games in their older consoles

Games are not the issue. The issue is the price. It needs to come down by $100. With this in mind, the PS5 is doing far better than it should. The PS5 is at least 25% more expensive than the PS4 when aligned but yet the sales are down by less than 5%. This means rev is WAY up. So what we do know is that components are more expensive this gen. But I still expect Sony to offer a price cut on the PS5 while introducing the Pro at a price of $500-550. And of course, none of this matters because GTA 6 will erase any unit sold deficit the PS5 has right now. I also expect GTA 6 to boost Xbox a bit but of course not enough to even begin to address the deficit to Xbox One.

The prices really aren’t that different.

PS4 in 2017 was $299/399 ($385/513 adjusted for inflation) vs PS5 being $449/499.

Inflation doesn't mean too much when wages haven't increased in the same proportion as the former.

It's somehow admirable that the system is still keeping pace with the PS4 WW but Europe, where the system is 450/550 Euros, at this point in time, the PS4 slim was between 250-300 euros.

The majority don't feel the same. They have upgraded to PC, ps5, and small few to Xbox.

Pc is a bigger problem then prices imo. People are starting to realize how great it is.

"Sony's Game & Network Services Segment for the quarter ending June 30, 2024, reported revenue increased 93.0 billion yen ($0.63 billion) year-over-year to 864.9 billion yen ($5.90 billion), while operating income increased 16.0 billion yen ($0.11 billion) to 65.2 billion yen ($0.44 billion)."

Was the PS Plus price hike worth it Sony? Less hardware and Software but the network segment saw an increase! There is a give and pull in these kind of situations.

I'm probably letting my PS Plus expire for the first time unless there is some kind of big deal here in my region, so if many people do the same (no idea) it will can actually end up being bad all around.

If games are not the issue why would GTA 6 clear all stock?

Consoles sell based on hype, and there are many kinds of hype, Price Cut hype is one of them but it doesn't last very long. Launch hype can last a lot, which happened with the PS5, it lasted a lot, and the Pro, if received well, can bring that back for a good while too, but Game hype is always the most important long term, a good follow up of big hype games (which may or not be good, what matters is the hype) can keep sales up all year long.

Astro Bot is likely going to be great but it lacks the hype power of games like God of War or Spider Man, and Sony not launching a single big hype game for the entire year is what is mostly causing the decrease.

People have long accepted to pay $500 for a PS5, learning about a price cut will certainly motivate a good bunch of people to get it, but if another God of War were releasing this year Sony could actually increase the PS5 price and it would get a massive sales boost just as well.

Price is mostly an issue at launch, once it's accepted its not an issue anymore, and nowdays $500 is actually not a lot for a product perceived as a good tech piece, people pay double that for a phone, twice or thrice during the lifespan of a console. People pay double that on a GPU alone.

It's also true for the Switch. Europe wasn't Nintendo's Forte even before, but now it just barely outsells Japan.

My guess is that Europe is more and more turning back to computer gaming like they did in the 80's and 90's, helped by the fact that most exclusives are also coming out on PC now.
