This is the Historical Console Showdown comparison thread.

This new sales thread will be about Historical Lifetime sales of already dead consoles ending very close with each other and will only be updated once ongoing console dies and in that case there may be some new comparisons depending on the performance of that given console, or in the rare cases of adjustments of old consoles presented here or when I decide to add new comparison. The model will be just like the Lifetime Console Showdown thread however for some of them where monthly data is not available the comparison will be quarterly (such as PS2) or even by Fiscal Years ( such as Gameboy) and it will be for the entire lifecycle of the given systems.

The battles are as follows:

  • PlayStation 2 vs Nintendo DS (157M & 154M) (Shipments)
  • PlayStation 1 vs Nintendo Wii (102.5M & 101.6M) (Shipments)
  • PlayStation 4 vs Nintendo GameBoy (117.2M & 118.7M) (Shipments)
  • PlayStation 3 vs Xbox 360 (87.4M & 85.7M)
  • PlayStation Portable vs Nintendo 3DS (82.5M & 76M)
  • PlayStation Vita vs Nintendo Wii U (15.8M & 13.6M)

So, the breakdown and additional information for every comparison is the following:

  • PlayStation 2 vs Nintendo DS (157M & 154M) (Shipments)

First of all, here, I will note that the chart is my old one which is PS2 vs DS, it is based on sales and shipments numbers combined (slightly corrected or rounded for the chart line where info wasn't presented because it is for every 4 months, not every 3 months like the official data of shipments is here, therefore it is accurate as possible, but of course can't be 100% on point for every period, because we don't have the exact data on sales for the PS2 by month or for every 4 months). And because the data in the table is shipments only (and is by 3 months quarters and the chart is divided by every 4 months) there may be some slight differences between it and the chart if you look at exact line and date. Also on the table comparison Q1 is calendar, not fiscal. So by fiscal it would be Q4.

  • PlayStation 1 vs Nintendo Wii (102.5M & 101.6M) (Shipments)

On that one, both are shipment numbers by calendar quarters, with the Wii reaching almost 40M lead at one point, and finishing below PS1 in the end.

  • PlayStation 4 vs Nintendo Game Boy (117.2M & 118.7M) (Shipments)

This one is by fiscal years, since we have only that info for Gameboy. Interesting to point here is that PS4 has been in the lead at one time with almost 70M, just to finish behind by 1.5M in the end.

  • PlayStation 3 vs Xbox 360 (87.4M & 85.7M) (Sales)

Interesting to point here is that PS3 at one point is almost 11M ahead, just to drop the lead to 1.6M in the end.

  • PlayStation Portable vs Nintendo 3DS (82.5M & 76M) (Sales)

Interesting to point here is that 3DS reached 7M lead at one point, just to finish behind by the same amount by the end.

The charts are based on the data here - VGChartz. On the chart the green line for the xbox 360 is at 84M at that time (the period ending in 1st september). If you talk about the numbers, then maybe you don't agree with the VGChartz data estimates. My threads are strictly made from that data. Also as far as I understand from the article, it's about shipped units, not sold. The data from VGChartz (and the same data I use) is for sold units.
