Man I hope either the Switch sells 162M+ or Sony for sure officially confirms the exact number of PS2 sold, cause if the Switch sells anywhere between 155M-161M, speculation will run rampant of if Switch is #1 or not. People calculated the maximum the PS2 could have sold is around 161.9M, so if the Switch outsells that, that'll essentially end all speculation on which is #1 all time.

However, when it comes to the general media, I wonder what number they'll use for the PS2. Some media outlets use the 155M figure, others the 158-159M figure, and now it seems like the big media outlets are pointing towards the 160M figure after what Jim Ryan said that even Wikipedia updated the PS2's total. Hopefully at least one of those things happen to end the speculation.

My personal opinion though is that the PS2 sold closer to 159M. I can't imagine the PS2 outselling it's prior FY where 4.3M consoles were sold especially when the PS2's last FY only lasted 9 months. Yea the PS2's sales trajectory was a bit more anomalous in its later years but I can't see it sell much more than it's prior FY.

I really hope the Switch passes the PS2. Imagine following its trajectory for almost 10 years and seeing it barely reaching PS2's numbers. And considering we still need to wait some more years to see if the Switch manages to accomplish this feat and that these last years are when it has less and less gas to burn... It's like watching a swimmer swiming miles and miles in an ocean to reach to beach and the more he gets close, the less energy he has

And then Sony comes out with to revive the PS2 with a new SKU - Pro model, with a 1080p output availability, 10 biggest hit games thrown in the package, PS2 console which is almost half the size of the last model (only the dvd there, and it's other parts below that, with external power supply) and 2 wireless compatible Dualshock 3s thrown in the package (yes, that means bluetooth connectivity as well). All that for just 99$.

By the way some funny things I met on twitter :

That would be funny. Then Nintendo in this pissing contest would declare the 'Switch2' as just another member of the Switch family of systems like Gameboy - Gameboy color.

Interesting, but also hard to believe. If you’re still selling 7M in your thirteenth (!) fiscal year, why would you discontinue that system? I can imagine they needed a production line for the PS4 and PS2 was pretty old by then, but still, wouldn’t you have wanted to find a way to keep such a success going?

If Switch 2 is coming out early next year, I don't see the switch selling 20M+ especially since it's selling less than 1M a month. Even if during the Christmas period it sells 5M+ I doubt it will be enough

This thread here is the perfect example of console warrior behavior. Moving the goalpost when convenient, Sony can remain silent and Sony fans will adjust the goal when necessary. Let the Switch cross 160 and the goalpost will move to 161. Let it cross 161 and 161.9 will become the goal because it was a "possibility" lol. It's hilarious really, vague random conversations in a podcast and old message board post are used as sources lol.

For me, it's simple: we now officially know that :

https://sonyinteractive.com/en/press-releases/sony-interactive-entertainment-introduces-playstation4-pro-500-million-limited-edition/
"With PlayStation® (PS) hardware sell through surpassing 525.3 million units worldwide".

So from this, if we base ourselves on the figures which are not up to date

https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/

it works out as follows:

PS1: 102.4M
PS2: 155M
PSP: 76.4M
PS3: 87.4M
PS4: 81.2M
-------------------------------------------------
Total: 502.40 million sold [as at 22 July 2018]

And that would put the PSVita at 22.9 million, which is of course impossible (it's not even certain that the Vita has done more than the Wii U (13.56), so ~23M lol).

Now if you take the updated figures, it's obviously more logical and in line with the 525.3 million announced:

PS1: 102.49M
PS2: 160M
PSP: 82.5M
PS3: 87.4M
PS4: 81.2M
-------------------------------------------------
Total: 513.59 million sold [as at 22 July 2018]

The PSVita ends up at 11.71 million, which is much more realistic and in line with its poor performance, which we already suspected at the time.

PSV must have ended up with 13-14 million at best, more than this I don't really believe it.

PS2 : 160M make sens, but of course for Nintendo fanboys, Sony is lying 😂

Barely any games were being released for PS2 in 2013. And that's where they make the money.
How much did they make on a sold PS2, which went for $99 in the US after 2009?

I'd wager those sales were primarily people replacing their broken PS2's to play the games they already had, and probably not buying new non existant games.

Just because you earn some money doing something doesn't mean it's worth doing when you could invest that portion into making substantially more elsewhere.

I wouldn't cite a figure if we hadn't reached it, so I wouldn't round down. But maybe he would.
It's an unspecific rounded number one way or another, so it's probably better to wait for an official specific number. (Which we'll possibly never get)

Okay. I see things are starting to get a bit heated with this latest news, with people throwing around terms like "fanboy" and using accusatory language. I get that most of us have our favorite brand of systems and that bragging rights are important to a lot of gamers. I also get that humans have a tendency to get really mean even over ultimately trivial things like sports, movies, or video games. But keep in mind that we're talking about toys here. Toys made by major corporations that care a lot less about you than you do about them. It's entertainment, not a matter of life and death.

So, as a general notice for this thread, please do try to act like adults and keep things civil.
