Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Could the Switch surpass the PS2 in sales?

They better reléase new Pokémon lets go Chikorita this year and secure another 15 million seller and help hardware

Switch 2 can wait until Spring 2025

Im either expecting a Legends Celebi, or a Legends Kyurem in November. I don't know if Game Freak wants to continue the Let's Go franchise.
Either way a guarantee to sell +15M software and at least 2-3M Hardware more.
Pokémon helps move hardware sales, especially if they release 1 or 2 new skinned Switch units.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 160 million (was 120 million, then 140 million, then 150 million)

PS5: 130 million (was 124 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 54 million (was 60 million, then 57 million)

PS2 has a massive *

Probably 20-30 million PS2 sales, at least, came from people simply wanting a cheaper DVD player and not even interested in games.

Anyone who buys a NS does so to play games. NS won this battle already.

PS2 tie ratio was 9.68 games per console sold

Switch 8.58 games per console sold

Your guess do not look grounded in reality

Is this just physical releases or does it also include digital?

Excludes digital-only games, but includes digital sales of games with physical releases

Considering how many indie games are digital-only, I think the actual attach rate if those are included is quite a bit higher.

I'm sure it is

Anyone know which is the better system for generating revenue (adjust for inflation)? Given that the Switch has never had a price drop and the PS2 had several (4) in the first 6 years it doesn't really seem measuring by just units sold is a fair assessment.

And these price drops were significant:

PlayStation 2 price cuts:

October 2000 $299 (launch price)
May 2002 $199 (-$100) 33%
May 2003 $179 (-$20) 10%
May 2004 $149 (-$30) 16%
April 2006 $129 (-$20) 13%
April 2009 $99 (-$30) 23%

I love the way you are looking at different angles, but inflation and price just isn’t a definitive metric.

how much would a PS2 be today based on the latest price cut with inflation?

how much would a switch be based on inflation?

we would have to calculate how much each era of price cut sold how many units and calculate that in account with inflation, then we can compare it to Switch in regards to inflation as well.

This feels a little bit like we’re moving the goalpost. If the Switch really wanted to become the best selling console of all time, Nintendo should’ve enforced price cuts. It would be insanely impressive if the console with almost no price cuts in its entire run managed to pull ahead of PS2, but ultimately when it comes to the question of which console sold more units, the PS2 almost certainly wins.

No ones moving the goalpost. We just want to see what the profit was in accordance to inflation.

we still acknowledge that the Switch is at 136.50M and the PS2 is at ~158M.
