8k, imho, is stupid given normal sitting distances. At some point resolution has diminishing returns.

Will depend on your display size. But yes there isn't a big enough jump in power for 8k30fps and the assets would be more costly.

I can't imagine many people 100 inch displays.  Sometimes tech is just a gimmick.  8k is a gimmick except special situations.

Given 4k we have hit a point where panel quality is more important than resolution.

Yeah, it looks like the greatest technological hurdle is our own humanity.   We are gonna have to upgrade ourselves in order to get any tangible benefit out of these higher res panels.

Resolution diminishing returns is good news. It implies that starting from PS6 or the equivalent Xbox, much less resources would be wasted on pixels. The gap between high quality CGI and in-game visuals remains massive, so these saved resources could come in handy.

4K is an overkill as is (1440p is perfectly fine to me). 8K is ridiculous outside VR and should be reserved for indies and smaller games that don't push the console (The Touryst runs at 8K 60fps on base PS5). Resolution is after all workload dependant.

1440p makes sense in 60 fps modes, but for 30 fps mode you want that crisp 4K since vast majority of people have 4K TV's now.

That said I want 4K to remain a standard for PS6 as well, not chasing that stupid 8K dream.

1440p upscaled to 4k at 60 fps and 120 hz is perfect

I bought GTA V for PS5 and 1440p in Performance and Performance RT mode is very blurry compared to 4K 30 fps in Quality mode

Not exactly a huge leap in specs, but that is to be expected, Sony will likely want to keep the price within the ballpark of what people expect to pay for console. I'm guessing that Holiday 2024 we will see the new PS5 Slim no detachable disc drive model drop to $350, the one with the disc drive in the box drop to $400, and the PS5 Pro launching at $600. That would put a $200 gap between the base PS5 and the PS5 Pro, $200 getting you about 50% more GPU power, a faster CPU, faster RAM, and probably a somewhat bigger SSD.

Not just price. Going any bigger than that would probably make the console too much heat and thus even bigger than it already gonna be. A console twice the size of the already big PS5 simply wouldn't sell well no matter how powerful it would be.

The PS5 has only one motherboard, and the size of the unit is larger because it matches the size of the motherboard.

Probably to reduce costs.

while Series X is made with two motherboards to reduce its size.

The heatsink is far smaller than the main unit, so power consumption probably did not dictate the size.

PS5.

Series X.

Both heatsinks.

Both heat sinks look like deadly blunt objects.

So what's the point? The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X were there to take advantage of 4K TVs. 8K TVs have negligible market penetration, as only super-big and therefore super-expensive TVs make that further resolution upgrade worth it (diminishing returns, and all), plus there isn't really any content being made in 8K.

Unless the PS5 Pro can make any game consistently stay at 60fps at 4K resolution (something that many games still can't achieve) and can do some good quality ray-tracing at either 1080p60 or 4K60, it just doesn't seem worth it.

Yea I don't really see the point. At least with the PS4/Pro there was a reason. 4k TVs but even the interface worked much better on the Pro. Doing things like getting out of a game and messing with the menu/chats was faster. All of that already works great on PS5 and games already look great. I guess we will know more once we get closer to the actual release date.
