Either PlayStation isn't big on announcing games far in advance or many games are stuck in dev hell. Seems like Insomniac, Santa Monica, Guerilla, Bluepoint and Housemarque are the only functional studios that will produce more than one single game it seems.

Agree with this sentiment.

I really hope its a case of trying to focus on what's coming in the short time. However this is problematic in that many games have already been revealed, that you would think should now have more gameplay to show and/or release dates. Such as Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin and a few others.

Insomniac is really carrying PS Studios at the moment and to think that not very long ago they were a 2nd party studio. I would have expected to see updates from Naughty Dog, Bluepoint, Team Asobi, Bend Studios, Sucker Punch and some 3rd party exclusives. All the info we get about what PS Studios are working on is based entirely on rumours which should not be the case.

At this rate we are more likely to get a Wolverine gameplay reveal than updates from any of the other studios. Studios that have not released anything major in the last 3 years really should have been present at this one.

This conference wreaks of arrogance unfortunately.

I think this overly negative for no particular reason.

A lot of what was shown is coming 2023, and with Sony being very willing to use SoPs at random times in the month, there's ample opportunity to focus on both announced and unannounced games. Sure, i agree that the lack of any updates on Steller Blade, Convorallia and Firewall Ultra is strange, but at the same time they're most likely finishing up development with 1 last trailer (their launch trailers) being the only thing to take time away from said development.

At the end of the day, Sony doesn't need their Showcase' to announce new PS Studio titles: they can do that very easily with SoPs. If anything, taking into account the number of major AAA 3rd party titles at the show, Sony were most likely bound by marketing contracts to start having avenues to advertise these games. A 'showcase' just allowed their partners to get a lot of eyes on their announcements, which is a win-win for all parties involved.

There's really nothing to be worried about.

I can understand your feeling towards it, and you are absolutely right with regards to the bolded. But to say I have "no particular reason" to feel negative seems a bit dismissive of valid concerns. Some studios should be at a point where they are ready to reveal some info on their coming games, and even some games that were revealed there is no indication as to what type of game it is or how it may play etc. Jim Ryan spoke about the next phase for PS5, however we still have no idea as to what's coming next year or in this next phase. It implies that what we saw is what's next. Hell it doesnt have to be in the long term, what is coming in Jan 2024 to June 2024? Anything at all from PS studios?

Sure it may be the case where they will hold back PS Studio reveals for SoPs but its been a number of years now, and we still havent seen anything really. Also Sony has not set a precedent for big reveals during SoPs those are normally for deep dives.

At the end of the day all these conferences, showcases and SoPs are all extra - as a consumer I really just want to see great games released on a yearly basis. As of right now im not super confident in whats coming in 2024.

You're probably right, I would still feel a lot better about it if, Sony or a studio like Naughty Dog would put out a tweet saying, we have huge announcement coming at a later date for a big 2024 and 2025.

Sorry, you're right. I shouldn't be dismissive of your concerns. I apologise.

But I don't think this is cause for concern. There's still a god few months to go. I imagine if we haven't heard anything by September/ October in relation to 2024 then maybe something is up.

Anyways, Sony have already said that they're looking for 2 big games for each year, so they'll def have something for 2024. But, Helldivers 2 finally being announced was great.

So 1 game per generation for one studio at this tempo. Great!

I feel like it's important to contextualize a few parts of that:

They specifically say "major" games. So that might bolster the numbers. They might not consider some of the Sony published games as major like Stellar Blade. They might not consider Team Asobi's game to be major or something.

They specifically place it as a baseline, two or more.

There are some other Sony published titles that are supposed to be coming in the next like 12 months like Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Convallaria that weren't at the showcase, and it's kind of odd.

Sony overall seems to be having a strategy of announcing games closer, while announcing really big titles a year or two in advance. The only exception to that has been Wolverine really.

7/10 as a State of Play, 4/10 as a PlayStation Showcase. Some cool games shown. Helldivers, Plucky Squire, MGS3 and Collection, DD2. But overall, meh. I’m not huge on Spider-Man, so on the Sony side, complete dud.
