Forums - Sony - PlayStation |OT| Playing Astro Bot on the Horizon Until Dawn

Damn, this really is a goodbye to the franchise. At least the mainline series.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Around the Network

It's that time again PlayStation Nationals! I'm going to run another informal comment contest for my latest review:

https://www.vgchartz.com/article/468204/call-of-the-elder-gods-xs/

Rules are simple: make a comment to be entered into a lotto (not counting any that have to be moderated). Max amount of lotto entries is one.

1st place: What I'm calling the "Out of the Blue Bundle": game codes for Call of the SeaAmerican Arcadia, & Call of the Elder Gods. Though the former two are also available on 8th-gen consoles, Elder Gods appears to be only PC, PS5, Xbox Series, & Nintendo Switch 2. If unable to acquire legit game codes, then I'll compensate their accumulative retail value with a gift card.

2nd place: 1 year of VGChartz Bronze (or the next higher tier should you already have that)

Deadline to enter will be 6/16/26 @ 11:59 EST

That's the closest we'll get to a proper return of the Halo 3 glory days!

To think, Bungie made that game with only like 110 employees total. They can do it! Having the game be a live service at the start of development would need a massive amount of people, but a focused standard style game doesn't. Can have a smaller team working on that as well.

That seems to be the only way out for Bungie. The return of smaller yet focused non-live service projects. Destiny isn't gonna be making any money here in the near future when this final push dies down. Marathon somehow cost Bungie $250 million to make and still isn't close to breaking even on just developmental costs. A smaller budget release can help breathe some new life, and creativity, into the studio.

I wouldn't mind seeing a single player experience in the Marathon universe that reuses assets, characters, environments, etc, with a more modest price tag and a shorter development cycle.

I can actually see current Sony greenlighting something like this too lol.

Really? I think this is the first time I've read about it.

I do hope they have more than just Marathon in mind to keep Sony at bay, sure, if Marathon somehow explode in popularity someday, it is a possibility when there is a good product and a company doesn't give up on it, like Cyberpunk and No Man's Sky (those 2 game did have massive frontloaded sales to start with tho, despite how massively bashed they were they did bring the money day one), but it would be better to have other projects, in their case the safest one of the best, so Destiny, so they have a better perspective of pulling their weight eventually.

IIRC it was mentioned in one of Jason Schrier's articles. It was supposedly a Destiny spinoff with TPS gameplay inspired by Genshin/Warframe.

That was Project Payback. It got cancelled in summer 2024 and the remaining staff got moved to Marathon. The other project that survived was Gummy Bears, which got moved to under Sony’s direct control, and all the team moved with it.

Reports are that Bungie is about to lose around 50% of its staff.

Around the unfortunate number I was personally expecting, most of the studio was working on Destiny 2 so with out it ...

Repercussions to other studios is what actually worries me.

COME ON, SONY. IT'S RIGHT THERE.

That plus all the stuff going on Xbox and some other companies is likely going to result in the worst mass layoff the industry has likely ever gone through.

Very sad news ahead.

Probably an unpopular opinion in the midst of all these layoffs, but with Microsoft considering spinning off parts of their gaming division, and somehow id Software is one of those studios on the chopping block, I hope Sony would consider buying them.
