Forums - Sony - PlayStation |OT| Playing Astro Bot on the Horizon Until Dawn

The more I play Marathon, the more I enjoy it.

But it's not something I am going to pay for, at least not the full asking price. I understand the purpose of this as an extraction shooter. I appreciate in teams that you can ALWAYS be revived as long as long one of your teammates is able to do so.

But I just hate the long time from leaving a match, gearing up and then just waiting for a match to repeat this long cycle again and again. This is partly why I also feel a slightly higher TTK and more enemy encounters might be better: it would be more engaging this way.
OR, allow me to respawn back into the match as a Rook (whatever objective you were going for is auto forfeited) but you can at least keep going. As a Rook you have nothing on you anyways. Just give me the chance to try exfil with something. Create some other disadvantage for the respawned player so that coming back this way is still viable from a playing perspective, but tougher because you've already been bested.

i dunno... I feel this would be a more engaging loop.

After reading Jason Schreier's article, as unfortunate as it sounds, I kind of get why Bluepoint was shut down.

They simply weren't ready to be a studio that made original content. They pitched live service GoW despite many claiming Sony forced them, pitched a SoTC PS5 version, they wanted to work on a GoT spinoff but couldn't do it without the help of Sucker Punch, and got their BloodBorne remake approved but ultimately shut down by From. They essentially operated as a support studio that had no interest in doing remakes.

"the newly acquired PlayStation studio had ambitions to make its own game rather than co-developing or remaking games made by other companies."

Touched on this in the other thread, but this is not the same as having "no interest in doing remakes."  They pitched 2 remakes last year, so clearly were willing. I'm sure most studios of their function also have ambitions of doing original content and would jump at it if given the chance, just as Bluepoint did.

The interesting question remaining, is what did Sony actually wanted from the purchase to begin with? Did they want them to immediately start making original content, would they have been happy them being a remake and support studio?

As it was reported that Sony greenlit the Bloodborne Remake, Sony was clearly ok with them doing remakes for at least some more time.

I believe Sony AND the BP leadership wanted to make something new from the get go. The mistake was to think making a service as their first original game in 15 years was a good idea. One of the many low effort rumors out there says Sony told them to start a game in the GOW universe without Kratos and then time later they included the facts that it had to be a service. I don't believe that, just because any game starts by designing the game, having your employees wasting money working blindly because you didn't want to tell them their game was a service doesn't make sense from a business perspective so no I believe BP was on board day 1.

I don't think BP being Santa Monica support studio was exactly the plan either but God of War R. needed help after the huge delay it suffered because of covid.

I didn't play the Marathon demo but I did play the Horizon Hunters test last Friday and yesterday, I can't say specifics because of "legal" reasons but I can say that I was interested before testing it and I'm still very much interested.

I just don't see how that game is going to survive if the Horizon community doesn't give it a chance.

I didn't know there was a test for the Horizon game, was it in person and you are under a NDA?

I think it's still wildly short sighted.

Hey, why don't you guys work on remaking some older PS2/PS3 games, while figuring out your new game project?

A proper remake/remaster of Resistance, InFamous, Killzone, etc.

I wanted a proper remake of the OG Ratchet and Clank that's better than the 2016 version. Yuck.

NateTheHate said Santa Monica new game is a God of War game, but with Faye (Kratos spouse in the Norse saga) as the main protagonist. So it's a game that predates the Norse saga.

Should be announced this year and release in the first half of 2027.

Why the actual fuck would they want to not have Kratos as the main character?

"But Kratos has gotten X games" yes, and he should be the lead in every single one of them, not Atreus, not Faye, not Freya, not Athena, or anyone else.

FFS. The game should be great as they ever make them to be, but I don't understand why Sony needs to try to distance from popular characters they develop so much.

Was able to play Marathon for about 10 hours this weekend. There’s a good game there for sure. The big question is if there will be enough content at launch to justify the $40 price tag and how quickly can Bungie iron out the big issues players have with the game.

So far, the beta has received a mixed to positive reception. Not the runaway success I’m sure Bungie was needing. After 15K reviews, the beta currently is sitting at a 3.03/5 on the PS Store.

If Bungie can quickly iron out a lot of the immediate problems the game itself has, I think it shouldn’t have an issue finding an audience. Because while the game does certainly have a quality look and feel to it, it still feels like a niche game for a niche audience. Whether simply finding an audience is enough to save Bungie, we’ll find out soon enough. Because the last thing I can see Marathon being is anywhere near a Destiny-level success. It’s very much an acquired taste game.

A few big things Marathon has over the likes of Arc Raiders is the gunplay actually being fun, ranked mode, and a proper endgame. Whereas Arc Raiders entire gameplay loop is almost exclusively around crafting. There’s not really much of a feeling of progressing towards something meaningful imo.

Enjoyed my time with the beta. Depending on how much content is there at launch will determine if I buy in early.
