The PSP sold a lot because it was the most affordable MP3 in the market, not because it was a good console (it was an excellent console)

Who told you that bullshit?

In 2004, there were already MP3 players with 1 GB available for €140 (taxes included).

https://www.computerbase.de/news/audio-video-foto/1-gb-mp3-player-fuer-139-euro.11733/

The PSP Value Pack costed almost twice as much and only came with a (proprietary) 32 MB Memory Stick Duo (0.03 GB, only enough space for a dozen MP3 songs).

The Memory Stick Duo cards with higher capacity were quite expensive.

Agreed with the response post, I don't see any evidence that PSP sold so well because it was an MP3 player. Now is it great that it was an MP3 player with other multimedia features while being a top-notch handheld in specs? Of course it is.

But I feel like this MP3 claim is like the false notion that PS2 was one of the cheapest DVD players on the market in 2000-2001. It was not. You could get DVD players back then for $100-$200 even if they were similar quality or a little worse than PS2's playback. It was more the value proposition PS2 offered. You could use it as a DVD player, PS1 (for about 99% of titles) and you had a hot new console's library (PS2).

Also keep in mind that watching DVDs out of the box with PS2 was cumbersome without the separate PS2 Media Remote. While it wasn't pricy, it's yet another cost if people were serious about using PS2 as a DVD player. Even my grandparents bought this remote with their PS2 because they didn't want to deal with annoying controls when someone wanted to use PS2 as a DVD player.

I've used my PSP for MP3s for sure but it was just for a little bit until I got myself into becoming a Apple product user with the iPod Classic. I wouldnt call it the reason why people jumped in droves for the PSP.

I remember a lot of people both online and offline getting PSPs not because of the library of games or it being a MP3 player but because of homebrew and modding.

People were playing SNES and GBA games more than the games on PSP lol.

Man, speaking of the PSP - I loved it due to that , the homebrew scene for the PSP was amazing. Dark_Alex being on the head of the scene was a great time.

2006 to 2012 were great years - both the DS and PSP's homebrew/modding scenes made it more exciting alongside the PS3/X360/Wii competition and flow of games coming out.

Anyways, my second most favorite portable of all time - and during that generation was my favorite portable system.

Now with confirmation that Yotei will allow multiple weapons (beyond the trailer seemingly showing this), and AC:Shadows having released, my hype for Yotei is really high. Probably only felt this way about a game for TloU2 (granted I waited years before buying it lol).

I have no issue if combat remains as is. Extra weapons is 1 thing I would've wanted. The 2nd is a ay to combo into different stances rather than just choosing them manually. I think that would make combat flow even more.

One thing I hope to see is better stealth, kind of what we see in AC Shadows. I think I've mentioned before, but I really hope Yotei feels like an MGS game in terms of movement feel and abilities. Like, beng able to hide behind your horse would be very cool. Being able to get more info by interogating enemies, and perhaps having the ability to just knock them out instead of kill them (when doing stealth).

Of course, better enemy AI for fighting and for stealth/ patrolling sessions would be welcome, too.

I also hope for darker darks, and better use of nighttime lights.

I mean, could just be the same game with a new story and I'd still be excitied for it lol

Speaking of Yotei, I hear it might be coming July 2025.

Weekly gaming update

Only played a bit of Driveclub this week - still going through the DLC for Driveclub.

No one told me "that bullshit", I lived it. Your first world situation didn't and won't cover the rest of the world lol. In my country it was cheaper to get a psp than a mp3. That's why I can say it.

Those Switch 2 game prices ... TT Interactive is looking with foam in their mouths lol.

Exactly, considering TT is the one who started the 70$ software price hike (Not Sony as others would like to believe) to begin with so they are likely watching very closely.

Well, the majority of PSP sales were in first world countries, not in the rest of the world:

And I doubt that in many of the "rest of the world countries" a PSP + expensive Memory Stick Duo were cheaper than a MP3 player.

If this insane price hike on games spread all over the industry... the guys have no shame in jumping $70 and going from $60 straight to $80, wtf is going on.
I'm glad I have many, many games to play, if it turns to the worst.
