Who told you that bullshit? In 2004, there were already MP3 players with 1 GB available for €140 (taxes included). https://www.computerbase.de/news/audio-video-foto/1-gb-mp3-player-fuer-139-euro.11733/ The PSP Value Pack costed almost twice as much and only came with a (proprietary) 32 MB Memory Stick Duo (0.03 GB, only enough space for a dozen MP3 songs). The Memory Stick Duo cards with higher capacity were quite expensive. |
Agreed with the response post, I don't see any evidence that PSP sold so well because it was an MP3 player. Now is it great that it was an MP3 player with other multimedia features while being a top-notch handheld in specs? Of course it is.
But I feel like this MP3 claim is like the false notion that PS2 was one of the cheapest DVD players on the market in 2000-2001. It was not. You could get DVD players back then for $100-$200 even if they were similar quality or a little worse than PS2's playback. It was more the value proposition PS2 offered. You could use it as a DVD player, PS1 (for about 99% of titles) and you had a hot new console's library (PS2).
Also keep in mind that watching DVDs out of the box with PS2 was cumbersome without the separate PS2 Media Remote. While it wasn't pricy, it's yet another cost if people were serious about using PS2 as a DVD player. Even my grandparents bought this remote with their PS2 because they didn't want to deal with annoying controls when someone wanted to use PS2 as a DVD player.
