Who told you that bullshit?
In 2004, there were already MP3 players with 1 GB available for €140 (taxes included).

The PSP Value Pack costed almost twice as much and only came with a (proprietary) 32 MB Memory Stick Duo (0.03 GB, only enough space for a dozen MP3 songs).
The Memory Stick Duo cards with higher capacity were quite expensive.
