VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Playstation 5 outsold the Atari 2600 at this point.

Xbox Series very close to the GameCube LT.

A few more weeks and the ps5 will surpass n64 sales

America hotly contested, and Oceania funnily close to the same numbers just at 1/10th scale.
Good to see both PS5 and XS sales up YOY and Switch down only around 10% for the week, in year 6.

29.99, 19.03, 13.01 and 10.01. I like how many things are close to a flat number this week. Also a good Christmas week but hopefully the PS5 and Xbox Series aren't down so much compared to gen 8 next holiday season.

Will be interesting to see if the report of Switch production being upped this coming FY pans out, and how that affects the YOY difference vs 2022.
I am skeptical they can reverse the system's natural decline, as it being up would be absolutely insane and almost unprecedented.

If I remember correctly, the PS4 also sold better in 2018 than in 2017.

VGChartz numbers have PS4 at 19.75m for 2017 and 18.25m for 2018.

I do think there are a few other rare examples though, hence "almost" unprecedented.
