Forums - Sales Discussion - Xbox Series X|S Outsells PS5 Again - Global Hardware Mar 27-Apr 2

Yeah, the 360 had 50M in NA to PS3 30M. That is quite a gap. But Xbox winning NA this gen over PS seems not only quite doable, but actually likely. How much it pulls ahead of PS5 is yet to be decided.

Yeah, I'm surprised a few think Xbox 360 level dominance in NA is possible, the Series consoles would need to 2:1 PS5 sales weekly from here on out for that to happen.

Can I specify which crows? I have these crows in my back yard that annoy me basically every day, because they are competing with a Hawk over the tree. This has been going on for MONTHS. I hear their horrible HAAA noise followed by the Hawk's SQUEEE noise, back and forth, sometimes for hours in a row. It's maddening. If you lose, can you please eat my back yard crows? Not only will you have my favor, but also this Hawk's favor.

I'll eat the hawk too if the Series X/S wins NA like the Xbox 360 did lol.

Xbox 360 sold nearly 50 Million units compared to the PS3's 29 Million units in NA. There is zero chance the Series X/S achieves a 25M+ swing without complete Call of Duty exclusivity and Sony fumbling the PS5 from here on out.

Did 360 have CoD exclusivity?? I know XB had exclusive marketing, but other than that the CoD games were available on PS3. I think you forget that XBL was just a better service than PSN. Which that game was heavily online multiplayer and people bought 360 because it was better playing than the PS3 version. It was less about exclusive marketing and more to do with 360 being the better machine for it.

PS4 entered into a similar exclusive marketing deal but that was after many were already switching to PS after the dismal XBO reveal / launch. And like the 360 before it, the games played better on PS4. It's just the way the pendulum swings, back and forth. If people can jump ship from 360 to PS4 then they can certainly jump back to Series X.

Or be like me... who plays both.

But I kind of like the hawk. It's beautiful!

Like I've said on this very thread, people jumping back to the Xbox platform this generation, even the Series consoles winning NA for the generation, is a completely different scenario than Xbox dominating NA like the Xbox 360.

I highly doubt the Xbox will win NA like the 360. It might be closer to 10M. I still very much expect the ps5 to still sell more WW by at least 20M.

The x1 was only what? 5 million behind after all the dreadul misteps and Sony kicking goal after goal with the ps4?

Zero chance is far, far too low.

Ah, I see what you mean. Yeah, I don't think Xbox will establish that much domination either.

I simply thought you were disputing the chances of Xbox taking back the US at all..

The margin probably doesn’t even matter, PlayStation losing the US market by any amount is a pretty big blow to the brand. It’s the largest and highest dollar spending console market in the world, it’s the market with the highest software attach rate and the market that spends the most on subscription services. PlayStation losing any ground in this market represents a large set back in potential game sales but especially in potential subscribers for any subscription service

The main point missing here is the large screw up the PS3 was, at least until the Slim model 3 years into the gen vs the strength of PS5 since launch.

PS3 vs PS5 launch is the opposite so far. Sony couldn't entice you to spend big on PS3 (in 2006), while they can't stop the hoard from wanting a PS5.

Worst case scenario, if XB Series truly was giving PS5 a run for it's money by year 3 and 4, Sony could launch PS5 Slim year 2-3, then just hold off on a Pro launch, if they more so planned on it, and wait until MS announced XB Series XL or whatever they call the mid gen refresh.

Then Sony can follow up maybe a year later or so with the announcement of PS6, instead of PS5 Pro. Let XB lock themselves into last gen while you launch into next gen. Give PS5, 6 full years, and get a couple years ahead of XB (Series 2 X) next gen. Which would also give Sony the easy choice of a PS6 Pro, 1 year after XB Series 2 X launches.

Both companies have slowly been changing the game in different ways each console launch, so I wouldn't put it past Sony to go back to a 6 year gen if they end up in a sales situation like PS3 vs 360 again. They almost certainly won't get a chance at a similar PS4 vs XB1 moment again.

It's not like MS would just sit around doing nothing if that was Sony's strategy. If XL comes out, it will be probably 3-4 years into the cycle, not 5, no way Sony would release PS6 a year later in year 4-5 of the cycle. Absolutely no way MS would let PS6 launch uncontested for a month, let alone a year.

4 years like XB1X. No reason at all to see why a mid gen XB Series X would launch sooner. Power means too much now to XB.

Sony then waits about a year, to make sure MS can't back out of their XB Series XL launch, then announce PS6.

Then Sony launches PS6 1 year after that, so a full 6 years of PS5. I think only 5 years of PS5 is pretty unlikely, unless Sony is desperate.

No way after only 2 years of XB Series XL would MS drop a next gen top tier model. It would be too soon and too expensive for a worthy gap.

MS would have to pull another 3 year, mid gen to new gen transition, while perhaps making another new XB Series XL for a next gen low end.

This would give PS6 a solid 1 year head start, and would also somewhat split the difference between low end and high end next gen XB.

It would also allow Sony to go crazy with a PS6, 1 year before next gen XB, so it could be $600 at launch, then $500 to match the XB launch.

This would either bring close to parity for next gen systems, taking away any power advantage, or would force MS to push power and charge $600.

Or Sony can go back to 6 year console cycles for good, which would help kill the low end console as well as high end power narrative if they did it right.

I agree, that MS can't allow PS6 to launch too far ahead, but if things are going really well for XB, MS is not going to want to transition. Nobody who's doing what they consider well, wants to give up that gen any sooner then they have to. That's exactly why Sony might fast track next gen if they feel too threatened. MS did it with the 360, though to try and catch up, where as Sony could do it to get back, in their eyes, their market share.
