Forums - Sales Discussion - Xbox Series X|S Outsells PS5 Again - Global Hardware Mar 27-Apr 2

Eh, i still can't see Xbox going for aggressive exclusivity when the trends of recent years has seen fewer and fewer games being locked to one console, and the fact they've already said they'll keep their biggest new acquisition, COD, on the competition. Microsoft's focus has been less and less on trying to push hardware and more and more on pure profit going back years now. Elder Scrolls 6 on PS5 is just too lucrative for a company with this focus to pass up on.

MS probably has to be a little bit careful. Sony acquiring Bungie was partially a warning, in terms of potential and not funds.

If MS makes too much exclusive, it's hard to believe that Sony won't go after the big audience games, like COD. If Sony were to put a major focus on creating a relatively successful COD competitor, it would make the MS $70 billion acquisition worth way way less than what it was worth.

Sony would only need to competitively challenge a few newly acquired MS franchises and the loss to XB will be great, while the benefit to PS would be even greater.

Sony could even do this through Bungie, or that same type of scenario with another acquisition, so they could put PS COD on XB and even Game Pass.

Successful COD competitor? Just like Killzone (Halo killer) and PS All Star (Super Smash killer)??? Well, then let them do it.

Sony already tried to emulate CoD when they made Zipper doodoo up SOCOM 4 and the results weren’t pretty. It’s extremely difficult to make an industry leading franchise, especially one of CoD caliber. In terms of sales, of course. I think the games have been trash for awhile.

You make it sound so simple, lol. So Sony would “only need to competitively challenge a few franchises” to make the MS acquisitions worth much less. Ok, good luck to Sony countering:

CoD

Elder Scrolls

Doom

Fallout

Diablo

StarCraft

Those are just the six most obvious and biggest selling, there are tons more that im not listing because they’re likely multi platform, like Overwatch, or new IPs like Starfield. Or even ones with no console port announced but could happen, like WoW.

Yeah, I’m sure Sony hasn’t already dedicated resources to try and capture some of these huge audiences. That’s sarcasm of course, Sony has already announced they’re working on a slew of GaaS titles. They’re already trying.

I gotta laugh at the idea that Sony massively overpaying for Bungie is some kind of warning to MS ???

That's certainly easier said then done. Even established franchises like Battlefield, Titanfall, Destiny, Halo and other large FPS IP's don't have the same grab as CoD does. We have already seen what Sony has released before when they try their hand at shooters. Nothing bad, but still not even close to less popular shooters like Halo and Battlefield. CoD is staying multiplatform anyways so I'm not sure why you think Sony is going to do something about it.

Along with their own CoD, they will make their own ES, Doom, Fallout, Overwatch, and so forth now if MS doesn't play nice? Lol I think if we have learned anything, chasing successful franchises isn't the way to go when it comes to Sony. When they specialize in their own stuff is when they do well.

It's even simpler than that.  They just need to make another Minecraft type of success. It's so simple that anyone could do it.

So, nobody actually got the point?

Nothing was said about how tough it would be. What was said, and meant, was that if Sony could just compete with COD, and maybe 1 other big new XB franchise, that the rest of those new XB franchises would be in trouble and would suffer. Not because everyone plays COD or would run to PS5, but because MS needs more specific games, with massive audiences, that make huge profits, in order for Game Pass to work.

Sony wouldn't have to compete with everything, just a few. They wouldn't require franchise killers either, just worthy competition.

If anyone could do it, Sony and it's growing studio's and partnerships are at the top of that list.

Will they though? Who knows? Possibilities, possibilities.

Lots of people sleeping on Bungie. Aside from Call of Duty and Minecraft, what other multiplayer franchise from Microsoft currently has more pull than Destiny, a new IP from the last decade that has over 187M players, probably closing in on 200M now. Halo Infinite? Doom Eternal? Forza Horizon 5? World of Warcraft? Publishers strive to have their GaaS titles retain players like Destiny 2 has for years. Sony could very well have the next big multiplayer just because they own Bungie.

We all got your point, but we think you're delusional.  For example, you say things like "If anyone could do it, Sony and it's growing studio's and partnerships are at the top of that list."

No.

Sony is not that type of company.  They do not just pull off amazing software out of nowhere.  That would be Nintendo, and even then there is a huge luck factor.  Sony has tried to make their own online shooter before, and it could not compete with either Halo or CoD.  Nintendo actually has made their own online shooter, Splatoon, by taking a different approach to online shooters.  It's success is kind of amazing and at the same time still not on CoD's level.

The way to make your statement correct would be to say, "If anyone could do it, it's Nintendo, and even then they can't do it."  Sony is not known for pulling amazing IP out of nowhere with fewer resources, and CoD is the type of huge success that cannot be replicated by anyone.  Sony's strengths are things like "consistency" and "partnerships with third party developers", but that can only go so far when Microsoft is buying up major third party developers.

Sony has no simple counter to what Microsoft is doing.  They are in a bad position.

Sony has created a handful of 15M - 25M+ selling tentpole IP every generation: Gran Turismo, God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Horizon, as well as having Marvel IP like SpiderMan and Wolverine to leverage. Unless you mean that Sony cannot replicate Call of Duty's success, which I do agree is a monumental task, but not all Microsoft IP have close to the pull that COD does. Something like TES? Sony can definitely replicate in terms of success based on their portfolio.

Also, not sure why you're not factoring Bungie into the equation. Destiny is up there with Apex Legends and Fortnite as one of the most successful GaaS models of the last generation. Sony not having previous success with online shooters is irrelevant when Bungie is now part of the fold.
