Both companies have slowly been changing the game in different ways each console launch, so I wouldn't put it past Sony to go back to a 6 year gen if they end up in a sales situation like PS3 vs 360 again. They almost certainly won't get a chance at a similar PS4 vs XB1 moment again.

It's not like MS would just sit around doing nothing if that was Sony's strategy. If XL comes out, it will be probably 3-4 years into the cycle, not 5, no way Sony would release PS6 a year later in year 4-5 of the cycle. Absolutely no way MS would let PS6 launch uncontested for a month, let alone a year.

4 years like XB1X. No reason at all to see why a mid gen XB Series X would launch sooner. Power means too much now to XB.

Sony then waits about a year, to make sure MS can't back out of their XB Series XL launch, then announce PS6.

Then Sony launches PS6 1 year after that, so a full 6 years of PS5. I think only 5 years of PS5 is pretty unlikely, unless Sony is desperate.

No way after only 2 years of XB Series XL would MS drop a next gen top tier model. It would be too soon and too expensive for a worthy gap.

MS would have to pull another 3 year, mid gen to new gen transition, while perhaps making another new XB Series XL for a next gen low end.

This would give PS6 a solid 1 year head start, and would also somewhat split the difference between low end and high end next gen XB.

It would also allow Sony to go crazy with a PS6, 1 year before next gen XB, so it could be $600 at launch, then $500 to match the XB launch.

This would either bring close to parity for next gen systems, taking away any power advantage, or would force MS to push power and charge $600.

Or Sony can go back to 6 year console cycles for good, which would help kill the low end console as well as high end power narrative if they did it right.

I agree, that MS can't allow PS6 to launch too far ahead, but if things are going really well for XB, MS is not going to want to transition. Nobody who's doing what they consider well, wants to give up that gen any sooner then they have to. That's exactly why Sony might fast track next gen if they feel too threatened. MS did it with the 360, though to try and catch up, where as Sony could do it to get back, in their eyes, their market share.
