Well they hit their peak with the Donkey Kong Country trilogy they really haven't made anything else really good ever since so that been over 20 years ago.

You're joking right? They were definitely at their peak during the N64 era. I'd argue their games were just as good for that console than what Nintendo developed.

If you're talking about their best series as a whole then I'd agree it's the DK Country Trilogy.

They've been rubbish since 2002, but they were one of the best developers in the industry from 1994-2001.

Unfortunately a lot of key talent left the building at the end of the N64 era, and they quickly became a shell of their former selves. Microsoft's management only seemed to make matters worse.

Thankfully, a lot of their alumni have reunited under the banner of Playtonic, and Yooka Laylee & The Impossible Lair was a game that manages to live up to the pedigree of their former glory.

Yep, it's a wonderful game, I am enjoying the experience these days and it looks like it's a rare game from their golden days

They just won a BAFTA this year for SoT, and even if it's not your cup of tea it's an insanely popular and loved game. They have 3 teams, one is dedicated to supporting their most successful game ever. Everwild could be good. As someone that has played Rare Replay fairly recently, let me say that most of their 90s games do not hold up, some of the worst controls in gaming. Now with MS's new leadership I have the most faith in Rare, especially riding high off the success of SoT.

Careful, facts are not always accepted here.

This so highly rated dev can barely support 1 game whereas they used to poop out multiple awardwinning games each year.
now i dont condone remasters or remakes for that matter but i would forgive em for wasting their talent on SoT if they actually would make a fun over the top race game again or BK4

That's the case for basically every studio, the ones who don't are making annually games to please their stockholders and the $$$

They have sucked ever since MS got ahold of them.

Actually id argue that their quality dropped off with the GameCube or DK64.

Rare made better games after those releases however its never always consistent. Some good, some mediocre.

One thing i like about Rare now is their  ambitions and new ideas. They have been trying something new all the time which is awesome. EverWild is another great example of it.

Rare are taking more risks now than they ever had before.

This real video from E3 may have something to do with it.

I guess it's all a matter of taste. I would take SoT over Donkey Kong any day of the week and without even giving it a second thought, and I'm really glad Rare moved away from character-jumping games. If what you're looking for is another character-jumping game there are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of other options in the market. Rare can do its own thing.

Pretty much.. they hit their peak during the SNES years but later squandered. It's why Nintendo let them go. Most of the talent moved on years ago even before the acquisition and now its just Rare in name only.

Its reminds me a bit like Bioware as it is now. Like a totally different dev as most of the staff and teams that made ME and DA are long gone.

According to Ed Fries: Activizion, Microsoft and Nintendo were all involved in a bidding war for Rare. Source.

This is despite the fact that Nintendo would have had an easier time buying out their remaining stake, as they owned 49% of the company. Might explain why the cost was so exorbitant. MS spent way over market value- $375 million in 2002.

Well, SoT is a huge hit and still selling great on Steam so I guess many players love what they do right now. But I would also prefer something else from them. But just because I would prefer something else doesn't mean they suck, though.

Sea of Thieves is the most successful game Rare has ever released, and continues to get excellent support.
Game development is WAY longer than it was before. Any developer from the 90s that is still around today used to release more games than they do now.
I would rather see Rare work on a unique and original games like Everwild, than try to chase their former glory of the 90s.
It's not like we haven't see classic Rare titles come back. There was Killer Instinct 2013, Battletoads 2019, and a new Perfect Dark is in development. I'm sure more classic games will make a return.
