Forums - Gaming - 7th gen vs 8th gen

I think the better gen was...

Wii/PS3/360/PSP/DS 64 62.75%

Wii U/PS4/Xbone/Vita/3DS 38 37.25%

Total:102

8th by a mile, for PSVR alone. PSVR made me feel like a kid again, discovering new things, putting the feels back into gaming. By comparison 7th gen was just 6th gen in HD with less variety. 6th gen had more online stuff but that never really interested me until GT Sport which hooked me for over 12,000 online sport mode races. 6th gen had motion controls and 3D but that didn't do much until VR became viable. 7th gen motion controls were more frustrating than fun to use.

Excluding PSVR, still giving the edge to 8th gen for BotW, HZD, GT Sport, God of War, Death Stranding, SotC remake, The Last Guardian, Detroit: Become human, Infinifactory, No Man's Sky, The Talos Principle, Drive Club, Life is Strange.

7th gen had plenty gems as well but many were hampered by poor performance and/or limited by memory. Slow UI, slow patching, screen tearing, long install times, terrible hardware, kinect, waggle games, psn hack, black crush on one side, washed out on the other, overall one of the worst gens.

The biggest negatives were MS's output not being quite as good as it was on the 360, and the increased prevalence of live service games and the aggressive push for microtransactions that came along with them.

Yeah I forgot to mention that, the prevalence of microtransactions, gambling mechanics, games that are always online even in single player, and other such exploitative BS are a big strike against Gen 8 in my view.

All of which became mainstream due to Gen 7 :/.

They were all far more prevalent in the 8th gen than the 7th though.

The 7th completely annihilates every previous and (from the looks of it) posterior generations. I still wish I could go back to it.

Like no amount of awesome BC can replicate the best gen to date.

Look at 7th gen releases. For the 8th Gen we didn't get a new GTA, Skyrim, and technically no Zelda game (I'm not counting the Wii U's version, no one played it there). For the 7th Gen, two zeldas, two GTAs, two Skyrims, countless new franchises like Uncharted, Last of Us and Gears of War. It was an awesome time for gaming!

ThePS3/Wii/360 was far more competitive and it brought the best out of all the companies. The 360 and PS3 was one of the best battles of recent times and the Wii spiced things up a bit with some unique concepts (Also SMG 1 & 2 were awesome). If you add the DS and PSP to that list, it's no competition

Even without the handhelds it was significantly better than every generations known.

I know a lot of people loved the 8th gen from day one. I personally bought:

8th gen
2 PS4
5 Xbox One (and 2 additional as gifts)
4 3DS
1 Wii U
1 Vita
1 Ouya

Compared to:

7th gen
2 PS3
3 Xbox 360
1 Wii
6 DS
2 PSP

But I have to admit, I spent so many years waiting for the 8th gen to get started. Waiting for that "leap". I did the same for the 7th gen but by early 2007 I knew I had arrived. 8th gen just felt like more if the same until the PSVR showed up to play.

Depends on if you include the Switch or not. If you don't, then the 8th gen was a total flop aside from Wii U's December 2013 - 2014, a few AAA games here and there, and the odd indie title or two (most of the noteworthy indie games came after the Switch hit the market anyways, though).

For the purposes of this poll/thread, the Switch is not included as part of Gen 8. It's Wii U, PS4, Xbox One, 3DS, and Vita, versus Wii, PS3, 360, DS, and PSP as Gen 7.

Gen 8 was such a disaster to me that I ended up selling the only system ( Ps4) I had bought after having it for a very short period. I bought a ps4 bundled with the Uncharted collection, which I really like, in anticipation for Uncharted 4, but oh boy was I disappointed! Uncharted 4 was a big let down. Terrible game! The only Sony game I wanted to play was God of War but, by the time it came out my ps4 was already sold.

Then Nintendo. Oh boy The WiiU was just a mess. Weird hardware and underwhelming software.

Microsoft was just non-existent to me.

Gen 7 on the other hand was kind of a golden age of gaming for me. The Wii was simply phenomenal. Wii sports is one of the most compelling softwares I have ever seen. Then Nintendo brought back my favorite video game series of all time, after a long, long wait, in great style: 2D Mario. I love NSMB Wii.

The ps3 had a really rough start but, in my opinion Sony more than made up for it with an amazing software output. I mean Naughty Dog put out 3 uncharted games and The Last of Us. I was also first introduced to online gaming. I can’t even remember the countless nights I lost playing CoD 4 Modern Warfare.

I never had a 360, but it had its gems too. Despite the 3 rings of death it was a very good system too, with great software.

So yeah, gen 7 was far, far superior to gen 8 in my opinion.
