Not so short than Rise.

World has a 100 hours medium in launch, Rise has 60-70 hours.

It was I played World to the end at launch Rise is a bit more fluid as it not only does it not have the long loading times between areas and it's much clearer in what you should be doing so you're wondering around less and it's quicker to get around. Rise's story wasn't finished but had more monsters at 61 while World's story did finish but wasn't that long and only had 48 monsters.

I´m still playing world sometimes now and playing until the launch

Rise too.

PS4 version shipped 8.7 million as of the leak's date, not 8.9. And we can't assume similar splits because Japan (which is now a non-factor for legs) skewed the data, and the game released several months later on PC (meaning PC version is noticeably outpacing the PS4 version). I think PS4 version will settle at 9.25~ million lifetime. PS5 is the hot new console, and MHW is available on it for free as part of PS+ Collection. MHW on consoles is outdated and probably getting pummeled by PC version which somewhat scales with specs. There's a reason Capcom openly talks about transitioning to PC as their primary platform over even Playstation and Switch.

Other information to take into account is MHR Switch will have its legs cut by the PC version a bit late compared to MHW PS4, their exclusivity period will coincide the holiday season. But on the other hand, Iceborne PS4/X1 was timed exclusive whereas Sunbreak will have a simultaneous release on Switch and PC. As a result, Sunbreak on Switch might sell a lot less than Iceborne PS4, or not. It depends on its reception from the PC community who may be underwhelmed by its design and graphics (It has lower minimum requirements than MHW, a 2018 video game). It also depends on Japan's reception, there's always potential for an explosion in software sales due to Switch's popularity and install base, even if it didn't really happen yet with Rise.

The problem with Rise is short compared with another MH; and a lazy job for Capcom, launching a game with a half story, neither World have this problem. The longevity of World is much better in the launch.

World didn't have to contend with the impact of covid on development, Rise did, hence true ending being added a couple of months after launch and its roadmap being somewhat sparse.

As for Rise only having 60-70 hours of content, I've played over 90 hours of it and I still haven't built even half the armor sets and even with sticking to just 3 of the 14 weapon classes I still haven't built everything in those classes.

Also, base Rise has more monsters than base World.

the point of monster I Agree. and the point of covid, you are right.

MHW (Iceborne Master Edition + World) has sold 20M.
Pretty sure PS4 SKU is >10M now.

Ask and you shall receive. Previous Monster Hunter figures apparently didn't include the Master Edition!

https://www.gematsu.com/2021/10/monster-hunter-world-shipments-and-digital-sales-top-20-million

This is nuts. My updated current split guesstimates:

PS4: 10.4 million (3.7 million~ in Japan)

PC: 7.3 million

Xbox: 2.3 million

I'm starting to think that going forward, the two line (lower-spec vs higher-spec) model isn't the best idea from a business and consumer perspective. Would make more sense to expand their teams and "demake" the iteration that targets PS/XB/PC specs (Dragon Quest XI style) rather than design around the weakest platform and scale up (Rise Switch vs PC) especially if Switch 2 turns out as powerful as I hope. It'll cost more and take longer to develop but the benefits could easily outweigh the negatives. A unified "Monster Hunter 6" on all platforms has the potential to sell over 25 million; imagine telling someone that 4 years ago!

Now that we know Master Edition wasn't included in the old figures, I'm upping my Rise prediction from 12 million to 14 million.

I'm sure that there will be some type of Master Edition (or Ultimate edition) of Rise as well, so I wonder what effect that will have on the total sales.

What it seems like is that the console manufacturers are paying for exclusivity (we at least know about Nintendo), so I'm not sure if the consolidated effort is actually going to happen. In addition, it definitely wont happen until Switch 2 exists since the Switch is so far behind power wise in comparison right now. But it would be cool if it did happen.

Monster Hunter Rise has passed 8m now.  I would assume the PC release is what pushed it over 8m.

https://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e220118.html

Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) today announced that Monster Hunter Rise for Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam) has shipped 8 million units worldwide.

The Monster Hunter series consists of hunting action games that pit players against giant monsters in a beautiful natural environment. Beginning with the first title in 2004, the series established a new genre in which players cooperate to hunt ferocious monsters with their friends and has since grown into a global phenomenon with cumulative sales of the series exceeding 78 million units shipped as of September 30, 2021.

Monster Hunter Rise was released for Steam, a PC platform with a broad global user base, on January 13, 2022*. Featuring high-resolution 4K support and voice chat functionality for PC, the game provided a fresh hunting experience that garnered praise from players while additionally growing the player base across a wide range of countries and regions. This, combined with sales of the Nintendo Switch version that was released in March 2021, drove global shipments of the game to surpass 8 million units.*Japan Standard Time

Going forward Capcom looks to further expand its player base with Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, a massive premium expansion for this title that is slated for release in summer of 2022.

Capcom remains firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all users by leveraging its industry-leading game development capabilities.

So half million sold since October, guess it did less than a third of numbers from World on its first 11 days as it crossed 10 million mark on August 20 after Capcom stated console sales to be 8.3 million: https://www.vg247.com/monster-hunter-world-10-million-copies

I'm starting to agree with Kyuu, it's becoming harder to justify Nintendo exclusivity. Rise sold only ~400k more than World in Japan, in a console that had 2.5 times the PS4 userbase and with a franchise know from being very strong on handhelds. Sales in Japan are from enough to offset the huge amount of sales missing from Playstation owners, specially when PC version sales aren't looking to be as big as World was. Next entry is probably going to be cross platform, first launching on PS5 e Series S/X, months later on PC and Switch 2 even if this means anemic software sales in Japan due to lack of interest in PS5. With MH popularity already degrading in Japan I see no reason to prioritize its home market anymore

Difference is that Rise in Japan hasn't been as heavily discounted as World

Chris1964 mentioned in the M-C threads; in Japan World was discounted by a bigger amount much earlier;
Best price edition for Rise only came in December in Japan(no eShop discounts for the holiday)

If Capcom lowers the price to ¥2.990 at some point in Japan it will spur on additional physical and digital sales. In any case the game is very much guaranteed to surpass 10 million units on the Switch this year with Sunbreak releasing.

In as far a the PC Release, I would say a lower launch was expected World had much higher budget and was the first MH on the platform. Still it's the 2nd biggest launch for Capcom on PC and Sunbreak is bound to help with long-term sales on the platform.

This is an example of cherry picking reasons to justify a point.

Even with the price cut MH was absent on famitsu December weekly charts, so price cut was a non factor for Rise

What I'm seeing from your post is World was actually more expensive at launch, and most of sales come from launch. If anything it gave arguments to understand why World sold a bit less than Rise

What has no explanation however is how Monster Hunter Rise sold only 20% more in a console with a 250% bigger userbase (soon 300%).

World being the first PC launch is more like a problem than an advantage, as it needed to build its own fandom from the ground. It started with a ~2 million in 2 week launch and soaring past 7 million copies since then.

In defense of Rise, Monster Hunter has a heavy multi-player focus and the game userbase is still very active. World is perceived as the best Monster Hunter, it's bigger, has better graphics and is a complete game with expansion, it's less expensive and has a big community. Even for newcomers it's better to stick with World if you want to experiment a Monster Hunter game. Rise is more like a game for fans that already played MH series and wants a new entry, while World is suited to anyone, fans and casuals alike

Btw, the 7.5mil milestone was reached on September 24th, it was just announced in October.
